I think only sky can afford to use them. Should have gone to screen though.

| Ian Smith was on GMR and pointed out that Phil was right under the ball directly inline with the post. Just watched the game and he was definitely there and watched the ball all the way. I have seen it from two camera angles, one I would say yes the other I would say no. Smithy said that the video would not have had an unbiased view as Phil had had so his decision would have been the best.

| Watched it a couple of times from rear and front camera views. From the rear looks over and from the front looks just wide. Don't know that the video ref could have come up with a conclusive decision that would have changed the original call of the ref of no goal.
I think Mr Bentham was in the perfect position to make the call and would have a had a far better perception of when the ball crossed the plane of the line than can be gained on a flat TV screen. I'm backing the ref on this one.

| No goal for me ,if my memory serves me correct, didn't Brough used to play for Hull ,and wasn't it Brough that missed a last minute conversion for them at Leigh when we were in super League, it was no goal but he complained bitterly at the time to the ref (Ganson) that it should have been given a goal, which would have given Hull a win instead of a draw, so he has a history of moaning then, if it wasn't him then I apologise.

| I think you're right, peawapp, it was Brough.
Don't remember him making an issue of it though. It was a touchline conversion and looked for all the world it was going over until it dropped under the bar.
This was all after Ganson had robbed us when we found touch on the Hull line on the last tackle and instead of a scrum he gave a turnover to Hull. Richard Horne went virtually the length of the field and it was the Aussie winger (forget his name) who scored wide out.
Even then the controversy wasn't over. We dropped a goal to win the match just as the hooter sounded and the DG was disallowed for being after the hooter.
Don't know why but that game is probably my most vivid recollection of our SL season.

| That goal that Brough missed v Leigh looked over until it curved past the right upright.
If the DG was kicked 15 to 20 yards further back, it would have been fine.
In my opinion, it missed and was a great call by the ref !

| Looking at the video there is absolutely no way to tell and would have to give benefit of doubt and give it. However look at where Bentham is stood, he's right under that post and in the perfect position to see if it's been scored or not so I believe him that it wasn't a goal. Disagree entirely with people saying he should have gone to the video ref, we can see that he wouldn't have been able to tell however Bentham was able to see.

The thing is when Bentham disallowed the drop goal he wouldn't have known if there was a perfect camera angle showing it going over or missing.
He was obviously 100% in his mind that it missed which is great but considering the amount of things that we see passed to the video ref these days I think huge decisions like these deserve another look just in case.

| If Bentham was sure then he had no need to go to the Video Ref, how many of you have said in the past, "Come on ref make a bloody decision"?

No doubt
I found myself saying that on a few occasions when I watched it last night and yet some of those decisions wasn't as vital or had as big a bearing on the result as the drop goal.
Have to say I'm being a touch two faced as I'm no fan of the video ref as aside from the 'its not at every game line' I've seen so many tries given by the video ref that have caused as much debate to 'was it or wasn't it' as if a ref had (or hadn't) given them 'live' in much quicker fashion.

| I like the RU version where the ref simply asks the Video Guy, "Is there any reason why I shouldn't award the try?"

Referees are like women, they make snap decisions and never reverse them.
Littlerich wrote Widnes will be glad to get away from Leigh. They've been regularly pumped, roasted and left in the alley-way by the lobbygobblers. Talk about being bitched - what a torrid time they've had. They'll be looking for some A&E rest time for the next three years at least.:simpsons/PDT13.gif |

Or the NRL version where the on field ref has to give an opinion and it's then down to the VR to find sufficient evidence to overule.
