Charlie, it was Stanley Baker who was in charge at Rorke's Drift, not Michael Caine.

Pat you may find both Stanley Baker who played Lt John Chard , and Michael Caine who played Lt Gonville Bromhead ,were both the same same rank , Lt John Chard was the most experienced Soldier , though not in battle as he was with the Engineers .

We have many Nationalities in the Carolis ,another was at the Alamo fighting the Mexicans , he was from Tennessee .

Can't let you get away with the equal rank thingy though. Chard and Bromhead were both Lieutenants but Chard had seniority by 3 months (Feb - May).

At the end of the film where Richard Burton names the VC's, he says after Chard "Officer commanding Rorke's Drift".
