Quote: WYSIWYG "I agree with a community club, but without a hell of a lot of cash you will never attract the quality players needed to bring the crowds back.
I couldn't care less if you agree or not, I'm just stating a fact of life. Without a huge cash investment Leigh will always struggle along on crowds of 1200 - 1300. For example, take the cash away from Huddersfield, the players would leave and they would drop to crowds of 600 - 700.'"

What you call "a fact of life" is what I call your opinion, which you are more than welcome to have of course, as am I.
I think this new BOM have the right idea, and as the club builds on all fronts then I think it makes it more attractive for more people/fans to come in with more investment. What I hope is that in the not to distant future, there is opportunity for more fans to come on board at lower levels of investment, thus giving a broad base of funds.

Quote: advocatus diaboli "Leigh East and Leigh Miners fill the role you describe here perfectly and the few niche rugby fans who want to involve themselves in more than just going to watch a succesful club once a week are adequately catered for by these excellent organisations.
The only way to take the professional club in Leigh to the next level is for a significant injection of cash, and if this was used wisely rather than just being spent on overseas contracts then it could be sustainable even iif the "millionaire" finally did back out.
The alternative isn't for us to "pack in" as some in here suggest, but it is to continue with crowds of less than 2000 and a team that never really troubles the RL world.
Quote: advocatus diaboli "]

Leigh East and Miners are indeed a vital part of the Leigh Rugby Community and I believe that Leigh Centurions should be the pinnacle of the Leigh Rugby Community. I actually see the cash invested by the new BOM as a significant initial injection of cash invested for a Championship Team. And as I understand it, this is not a single guy saying, "hey I'm rich so don't worry if we need to spend some money cause I've got lots", its money already on the table and locked in for the club.
I'm not saying that we don't need to attract more significant investment to make it in SL, but I do not think that the millionaire scenario is the long term future for our club.
Broad base and varied levels of investment, by people passionate about Leigh Centurions, is the sustainable future for me.

Exactly my worry.
A marquee signing at this time is not, in my opinion, money used wisely.
And a millionaire backer only wants one thing, unless he comes off the old terraces of Hilton Park or the new ones at the LSV. that thing is a quick profit that continues to grow significantly. Without that, he/she moves on to the next money making scheme.

Not neseserilly? What about millionaires like Marwan Koukash or Simon Moran? Both know theirs no money in RL, they know you need to get funds from outside of the game, they do it for the love of sport and winning!

And Mr Koukash has been at this how long ?
I truly hope he stays around for the sake of every Salford fan, but to put him forward as a shining example right now is about 4 years to early.
What happens if he doesn't get as much money from outside he was expecting, and/or Salford do not become a winning team. Think he will still be around for the long haul ?
And if he does walk away will the club survive without another millionaire to take his place.
I'm not having a go, honest, I really do hope he stays for a very long time. I just don't think it is the best way to build a self reliant and vibrant club.

I would use Wigan as a perfect example of this. Investing in youth, unlike maybe Bradford who spent on expensive short term contracts. As much as I hate Wigan, you have to admire how many young, local playres they have in their squad.

OK, so explain how against competition from 5 local SL clubs we manage to sign up at 12/13 the best local talent ( which will only ' bear fruit ' jn 8/9 years ) and then retain them if they are any good?

I wouldnt even bother with any junior development at all, there is no need whatsoever, we cannot afford it, getting the odd 20 grand every 3/4 years for a Chris Hill or Hoppy doesnt work financially

We are a proffessional entertainment business that currently loses money, cut anything that costs other than building that business, bums on seats is what we need

I realise there's a lot of anti-Wigan feeling around, but it's a bit steep to call them 'amateur' Keith! icon_wink.gif icon_wink.gif

You've taken me out of context. My point was in answer to how I would spend the money if a millionaire came on board. It was not meant to be a criticism of our current youth policy. I agree with everything you and Keith say, but the fact is we put in all that effort etc. etc. and lose the best to SL teams. IWith suitable investment we would keep them.

A D, Let me explain my position in the new structure, I am not able to throw millions at our club but would willingly step aside if you find a person that would be able to do so and not in director loans, safe in the knowledge that I had helped in some way to keep it alive when the reaper was at the door earlier this year

Now assuming that said millionaire doesn't exist, and I am a great believer in sharing the burden - what are YOU willing to do financially to help OUR club be the best it can be in its time of need?

Some folk need a huge shot of reality in their veins, and until we expand beyond our current highly loyal fan base we will never be the best we can be. This club is not big enough for ego's or personal crusades, close season we must come together behind a common vision supported by a clear strategy

Our future is about community, inclusiveness, pride and passion. Some great things are happening behind the scenes, and with buy in from the community we serve we will make great strides forward, that may one day attract a Dr Koukash to speed up the process, but in the meantime lets hit the goals we can see which may make the dream a reality.

We are in this together

The Community Foundation run by John Duffy and Stuart Littler is in part designed to do this with the seven apprentices they employ.

Its focus is working with schools and our local amateur clubs (not just East and Miners) to deliver coaching and education to the whole community.

It is our job as a BOM to make sure we assist our community partner clubs in any way possible and build great relationships. I've met a few great people already from Leigh East and I've also been down as a guest to a Miners game recently and have agreed to personally sponsor a game and try to assist them in any way possible and it is the intention to do the same with Leigh East as they are our closest community clubs. As well as this we've had great talks with Leigh RU and some of the wider communities amateur teams.

As part of the imminent restructure of the leagues the RFL have outlined expectations of existing and future Super League clubs in relation to player pathway and community development and it is the aim of the BOM to lead and be a shining example in this department and build not just a successful professional club but an even more successful RL community and town. The guys I sit with at the Boardroom table haven't just invested in Leigh Centurions we've invested in LEIGH!

We need to assist and reward the communities clubs in the development of the youngsters and it has to be a relationship built on respect, truth and honesty and that is what I personally will guarantee they will get from this BOM.

Wow. Can you all please pick up your dummies. My original post in this thread was in response to Vancouver Leyther who said he didn't want a millionaire investing in the club as they were likely to pull out after several years and leave us in a worse position. My point was that we would not be left in a worse position if we had used the money in a better way than bringing in contract Aussies. You must all be very sensitive if you see this to be in any way critical of the current set up or the local amateur organisation.

Even with the cash, without the profile of SL ( Wigan, Saints and Wire in particular ) you still wouldnt get the best

Get 11,500 fans in every week IN SL and 3/4 years of competing for SL silverware and then it would be a sensible option to invest heavily in youth, till then, dont bother, just buy the best off them as it seems Mr Koucash intends to
