| [quote="Bent&Bongser":6ytbiewt]Great posts, both Mick & Jack.
A question in innocence (in fact two): if a player has appeared in a competitive fixture during the term of his present contract, does that mean that he is counted on quota?
If so, could The Devils dodge that by asking everyone to sign fresh contracts (on the same rub) or would the contracts be deemed contiguous by the authorities?[/quote:6ytbiewt]
My very unqualified answers are yes, they would count on the quota. This is why the Cup game is a crucial deadline for Salford.
Secondly, yes. Certainly a contract of employment can be changed (I suppose this would amount to all intents and purposes as a fresh contract) but only with the agreement of both employee and employer.

| Thanks for the reply Mick. Bongser realises now that he muddied the water on the question by misusing the word quota whereby he meant cap. In this light, please reply again as your knowledge in this area is intriguing (and would make B seem "dead clever" when opining in The Egerton (Salford) tomorrow night!)

Good luck at The Egerton tomorrow night. Could Jack offer a very concerned suggestion for Bongser. Please take (and wear) a very hard hat and expect incoming missiles! The natives are very restless at the moment.
Yes, to question 1 in respect of the salary cap.
Jack's understanding is based upon recent articles rather than on a strict legal basis.
Salford are required to field a team against Midlands Hurricanes whose combined salaries (Salford's players) are below the imposed salary cap figure. To do that they either play their highest paid players and a team of academy children or, more likely, pick a team but with the top earners (probably Sneyd and Watkins amongst them) left out. Those who play will be fixed salary wise to count towards the cap figure because they will by that point be registered as Salford players for the coming season.
If the above is right then if Sneyd for example is left out of the team against Midlands Hurricanes then he will effectively be surplus and will have to be sold - pronto.

| I seem to recall reading an article on the Salford situation which stated that the RFL were ‘holding the purse strings’ regarding the £500K granted ‘on account’ to the Devils. If this is accurate I wonder if the RFL would approve salary payments to unregistered players.

I think the whole point of the £500k advance was because they had no funding to cover their running costs and player salaries since November. In all probability it has already been spent and is not sitting there as a nest egg.
Without that money they would have had to go bust.
This most recent pay date of this Thursday was crucial to them to see if there was enough of that £500k left to pay this months wages. By all accounts there was just enough.
At the moment they just do not have enough money to keep running

Reported by the BBC
"It is important to add that the advancement monies were held by RL Commercial and payments administered directly from them - the club have never been given the funds to manage directly."
£500K appears to be the amount required to cover 3 months of Player salaries.

I think Bongser will be fine. The SRD fans are now blaming everything on Yorkshire bias. It is fault of Yorkshire clubs and Yorkshire "Jernos" (sic). Anybody from Lancashire and Cheshire will probably get a bye.

AOK Bumper. The Egerton is by a Rail Station and on a major bus artery. We see Leigh fans (plural) and those of Wigan, Rochdale, Oldham, Leeds et al - tonight was sitting beside a KR fan! But since Skeletor Pete died (RIP) & John o' the big 'onds (soubriquet as we have too many Johns) took home his bat & ball, we get zero Salford fans and therein lies The Devils' biggest problem; Salford is rammed with Utd fans, few Salford RD fans. Unsustainable (though tragic).

On that basis I think new contracts would only make any difference if players were agreeing to take pay cuts.

| Just realised it's being shown on BBC. Not a great advert for the game, especially the start of Super League. Think the RFL should ask the Beeb to pull the plug, but that's too sensible for the RFL.

| What a disgrace. Putting a team like that out first game of season. Completely takes away all the great spectacle that Wigan and Leigh put on. No super league team should have a score like that put on them. Does Saints a massive favour with points difference. Could do massive damage to the game, people watching that on the bbc.Totally thrown their toys out the pram, and blame the rfl for the mess they created.

| Special mention should be made of Salford's hardcore fans - the real victims of this ongoing farce. Knowing that they were on a hiding to nothing; they travelled to Saints and took said hiding whilst supporting their colts throughout the rout and beyond.
Mr Integrity should (but won't) hang his head in shame.
The begging bowl went out in December and was duly filled but with strings attached. Since then Agincourtian bow fingers have been waved at the RFL, fellow SL teams and now broadcasters - the paymasters. THROW THE BOOK AT 'EM!
But what good would that do? What's still left in the book?
Points deduction? It would seem after today that Salford (barring again their hardcore support) don't value points.
Relegation? Is it still in the RFL's nal after IMG were called in?
Massive fine? What is the biggest allowed under our existing rules? If it is relatively paltry, hit them again and again until they toe the line. Maybe their new backers will start to get cold feet - if indeed they pass the fit and proper test!
After a great first few games of the new season (three really tight ones and an upset in Perpignan), tonight's debacle is what will stick in the collective mind!

More trouble brewing for the Salford Red Devils - https://www.loverugbyleague.com/post/rf ... ontroversy
Rowley's childish explanation for picking one team for the Challenge Cup, an initial squad with Sneyd and Watkins and the Academy side he eventually put out against St Helens, is picked apart in the article by Aaron Bower. Hopefully when the RFL throw the book at Salford, I hope it hits the two fingers that the Red Devils are holding up to Super League. This is not a good look for the sport and Salford are still in a precarious position with IMG gradings.

| Absolute disgrace from Paul Rowley, brilliant coach arguable best coach in the league with Lam but he was way off the mark with this one.
The side he put out last week against Midlands would of given St Helens a decent enough game. Its not the RFL, super league or anyone's fault other than Salford regarding there finances.
2 points deducted required imo.

| My take is both sides are at fault. Salford for spending more than they can afford is the crux of the problem and they should be penalised as such. The RFL for allowing the situation to drag on. They should have allowed Salford to field their strongest team and punished Salford with a points deduction rather than letting this farce play out in front of the BBC cameras. Unfortunately, we have no strong leadership or common sense in the RFL.

I agree the RFL have handled the whole situation poorly, ever since the request for advanced funds was made. But the team selection made by Rowley was an absolute disgrace. They knew and accepted the salary cap conditions as part of receiving the advance, and what that reduced cap does is stop Salford from fielding a team that is funded by an advance not available to other clubs.
To not pick the first teamers they could pick was bad enough. To only go with 3 subs is dreadful. There should be some punishment dished out for this, and given their willingness to throw these kids into impossible situations, I'd be asking serious questions about whether they should be allowed and elite academy license. They ought to be put on notice that they will revoke that if they pull such a stunt again.

| What I can’t get my head around, is why img didn’t spot any issues around there finances when they were doing there gradings. As for Rowley saying about players meeting each other for the first time, total .

Were Bongser to have his thoughts “dissed” by the real ee cummings, he would indeed be flattered (if a little alarmed, as said gent has been dead for 62 years), but he accepts no pale imitations! “Diss-missed!”
Bongser spoke of the collective mind, not yours. As B got into work today, the cleaner, Brian (Manc, works Sunday to Thursday) spoke not about Wigan 0-1 Leigh, but about the farce with Saints.
Derek has been very supportive of Salford in their inpecunity (see his posts/tweets passim), but he seems well dischuffed with Rowley’s shenanigans:
https://www.seriousaboutrl.com/derek-be ... ed-stories
The RFL also seems less than impressed:
https://www.totalrl.com/rfl-launch-inve ... ens-clash/
Though, with the RFL as ever moving slower than an iceberg (will there be any icebergs left by the time they act? And, no, Bongser is not talking about lettuces (or Liz Truss)) will anything meaningful happen. They’ve given Salford a week to respond. Why a week in this “instant” day & age?
Postpone any ratification of the new ownership until a response is forthcoming; keep the sanctions in place; and if Rowls (to borrow a cudgel from Leythig) pulls the same stunt again versus Leeds on Saturday, come down hard!
satanic mills, Bongser presumes that you derive your name from William Blake, He also wrote, “There is a grain of sand in Lambeth that Satan cannot find.”
Is there a grain of integrity in Mr Integrity? Will he hold up his hands, admit that he behaved deplorably, apologise and accept the consequences? Or will he come out all-guns-blazing like Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid?
If the latter, Bongser can only see a picture of Paul Rowley fade into sepia to a Bacharach soundtrack concerning raindrops and a dikk-ead!
Rant over!
For now…..
Annoyed of Atherton (name & address supplied).
