Tony you forgot to mention his GB caps too. If JW had been in that Pie team you wouldn't ever had heard of Edwards because John would have eclipsed him.

One more thing Dessie and Jason Robinson are twins for me. Both fantastic.

Quote: hoofhearted "outside of leigh there would be very few people who would nominate des drummond in any sort of 'best of' compilation. he was ok but nothing special. it probably says more about the leigh club that the likes of des and john woods are held in such high esteem whereas at other more successful clubs they would be seen as no more than half decent. i've been watching the game for 30+ years (and i know there are people who've been watching the game a lot longer) but even in my time of watching the game dessie was not a 'stand out' player. offiah on the other hand is far and away the most special winger of his generation. with regards to comparing players of different eras, it's impossible as the game is constantly evolving and suits different size/style of players at different times'"

Look at these stories from mostly Warrington fans if you think no one but Leigh fans hold Des in high regard.

How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home winemaking course, and I forgot how to drive?:icons077e_files/4864-863FALH-msnicons.jpg

easy there fella!

I think Woods was one of the best natural talents there has been. If he had applied himdeld and looked after himself he would have been a GB player no doubt.

Still think you are wishing with thinking Des was better than Offiah.

I don't know why we are even bothering discussing the merits of Des and Woody with these 'idiots' from Wi@@n and elsewhere! I can tell them regarding halbacks, John Woods at stand off and, Alex Murphy at srum half are better than anyone to have represented their clubs! As for Dessie, his exploits on 'Superstars' put Rugby League in the showcase, a superb all round Athlete and Superstar! eusa_clap.gif

It does have to be said that Woody IMO was the greatest natural talent I have ever seen and yes its a pity he didnt apply himself to the sport as did a player like Edwards who was again a natural talent but worked hard at it and thus made his name, plus it did help him being in a team which at the time was far and away the best in the sport.
As for wingers Boston was the best, Offiah was a great try scorer but with the centres he had who wouldnt have been he had lots of natural pace and balance and the two (well three) combined made him a great player. Dessie never had that luxury of playing outside great centres and fed off scraps which, again IMO, made him the better winger, Robinson was better than both.
Woods did play for GB (in a number of positions which showed his versatility) and would have played many more but he seemed to prefer darts and dominoes over playing for his country icon_biggrin.gif but that was the greateness of the player he just didnt care tuppence yet what an amazing player on his day, he gave his 100% on the field not off it unfortunately.

[i:5a56um9q]Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence. He certainly does. I remember asking him about Woody and Edwards and he said that Woody was without doubt the best player he ever had playing for him and he couldn't be matched for his natural talent. The only way that Edwards had the edge over Woody was his determination, but for natural skill and ability, it was Woody every time.

Edwards also had the edge in application and consistency; despite his achievements Woody was a talent wasted.

Edwards had no edge over Woody, absolutely not! Good player player though Edwards was, he just was not John Woods class! as for applying himself well, he did a pretty good job in the ten years I watched him play for Leigh!

Edwards captained england schools rugby league and union at 14......Murphy wouldnt have coached Edwards in his prime as he was 16/17 when Murphy coached him.

he never got to coach Hanley, Edwads, Kenny so the argument of he was more skillful because Murphy said so doesnt add up.

Dont get me wrong woody was a good player but he wasnt as good as Edwards, if he applied himself more he could have been but let himself down I feel.
