Irish by blood,
LEYTHER by heart and soul!!
30/04/06 "Some of W*gan's travelling fans headed towards the exit before it was even over.".................no change there then!![/quote:suio7kr3]
.....They are our people. Drummond, Costello, Manfredi, Svabic, Martyn, Street, Tickle, Patel, Mossop, Horo, Bristow, Leuleui, Varley, Fleary, Rivett, Tabern, Doran, Woods, Donlan, Wilshire, Leaefa, Hansen, Sale, Murphy… these are all my people.
As a Leyther, you’re one of us the moment you come here to wear the shirt. I don't care where you were born, what colour you are, what religion you are, what language you speak. You're one of us, part of our culture, writing our history as you create your own, and making us stronger for it....[/quote:suio7kr3]:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_10303.jpg |

| How about my namesake?
The AJM of his day!! Challenge cup winning captain, and Lions Tourist......and from the bit I've heard he could play a bit too!!
Murph and "God" are head and shoulders the best ever to pull on a Leigh shirt - Alex will edge it in most eyes, as he proved it for longer, and was more prolific at international level as well. As Fred says, if Johnny Woods had applied himself, he could have been the biggest player on the planet - but he would have lost some of that 'magic' that makes him our all time club legend.............would he have beat Leeds on his own, if he'd not been to the stag-do, and had a good nights sleep?? Maybe - but it wouldn't have been as good a story, would it??
Dessie was a class act.
In the modern era - Turley - points machine, and best reader of a game since Woody. Just a pity he was injury prone. Another few seasons, and he'd have owned the entire Leigh record book!!

Without a doubt Alec Murphy one of the all time great of World Rugby
Woody brilliant also his record speaks for itself breaking records for every team he played for.
But Alec Murphy was in his prime the best halfback in World Rugby...

Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity
Just to avoid confusion Starbug is the username of Steven Pike
SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!:9005.jpg |

As I said earlier , some great players , Steve was one of those , Mick and Tommy ( my personal favourite ) , Tommy junior ( just wish we had had him earlier , Turley , Kevin , Dave Chis and many many others that would become obvious if you looked properly through the generations , ATEOTD , they put on the shirt , they are one of us , all of them , playing the hardest team sport in the world , representing our team , our town

| Quote: Starbug "Only two need mentioning
Murph , widely accepted as one of if not THE greatest RL player ever , tactical genius and inspirational coach
John Woods , for 2/3 years in the mid 80 s he was the best stand off on the planet and probably the best RL player as well
We have indeed been ' blessed ' to have these legends of the game at our club
Several others were great players , but these two stand above everybody else'"
could not agree more, these two are light years ahead of anybody else.
alex still regularly referred to as the greatest player of all time, although think wally lewis, lockyer and elleray are not far behind

| We have been very lucky at Leigh to have had some of the finest players ever. I've watched them since the mid-fifties when Mick Martyn was the star player at Leigh and every club wanted him however, he stayed loyal to Leigh! The best player I've ever seen (of any nationality) was Murphy however, John Woods was magical, to stand on the terraces at Leeds,St Helens, Wigan and the like and see him destroy their teams was unforgetable!Like Murph he would have got in any team in the world!
I'm amused when I see Timmy mentioned as a legend, I'm sure he was in Woody's bar!!! he would however have been traumatised by Stan Owen who played 415 games in 13 years and rept'd GB too! Bill Robby 14 years for Leigh 395 appearances another GB rep, Alf Wilkie and Dave Chisnall GB reps too these were all outstanding Props! We really have had some great players and its been a pleasure to have seen them.
Murphy tops my pole because he had something in abundance Woody didn't have, MOUTH

| I just managed to 'catch' Bill Robbie and Stan Owen's last few games they were awsome then two big blokes who were fearless in both attack and defence.

Yet two absolute gentlemen (in every sense of the word) off the pitch, from what I'm told.

Stan is a gentleman Walt, when we used to go in Bond ST Catholic club he and his wife Joan were always in on a Saturday night, always had a good laugh with him, not seen him for years now, anyone know how he is doing?
