Quote: frankb "And here is an astonishing fact which will come as perhaps little surprise to regular readers of this board but Leigh stores sell more peanut butter and celery than any comparative size town in the UK and even Western Europe.

and i can also confirm leigh sells more vimto than anywhere else in the UK, and has done since 1975!!

Quote: davo1979 "I work for sainsburys head office, but I keep a close eye on the store as it's where I started off.

Leigh as a 'site' including the petrol station does very well indeed.

Personally I think that the tesco and morrisons will have a greater negative effect on Asda.

It's incredibly rare for sainsburys to shut supermarkets, even the ones that don't trade that well, its all about market share...

On a separate note I don't think the OFT will allow asda to take all of the Netto stores and launch them as food shops. So the netto in Leigh could go to either another retailer/developer or could be converted into an Asda home store. Possibly.'"

I stand corrected then, and apologies to anyone who has family working there etc. I just think generally Sainsbury's is dearer for alot of things (I know there's the "quality" argument) and people would prefer Tesco or Asda. That said if people like going there I guess they're unlikely to switch.

My point about short time was from a friend I worked with who's girlfriend worked there so it could be she was part time anyway. I wasn't trying to do anyone out of a job guys icon_wink.gif

They are trying to make their staff work these Bank Holidays and I believe the unions are now involved, if I was still there, no way would I be working.

I'd say it goes with the territory, to be honest. If you work in retail then there's no such thing as a Bank Holiday.

It used to be that as Boxing Day is a Bank Holiday, then Monday 27th December becomes Boxing Day if Christmas day falls on a Saturday. Sunday 26th December is usually, or used to be, known as Christmas Sunday. Apparently this no longer applies.

The more Supermarkets we have the better. Having these brand name stores in town attracts other shops to come and people to shop here. Admittedly there may be one or two casualties but there are a few town centre shops I wouldn't miss! And its about time we had a Cinema back in town too.

Not sure how involved the Union's will be willing (or able) to get when the TUC's own website says;

"Contrary to widespread belief, there is no absolute legal right to take bank holidays off. However many people's employers say in their terms and conditions that you do not have to work on bank holidays and get annual leave in addition. This is unlikely to apply however in service occupations such as retail, call centres or public services where the employer's business does not shut"

Slightly off topic but with a full house of supermarkets is it safe to say that the small local food shops in Leigh are a thing of the past ?
