Quote: Honest Joe "As others have said, the second half was great. First half we were poor though and Widnes looked like they wanted it more than us. Jury is still out, but a big improvement on the end of last season.'"

I'm with you Joe,i thought we were very pedestrian in the first half.
Lets hope we can keep it going for the whole season this time ,i'm sure we can.

Quote: Michael_Ward "It looks to me as if we spend the first half softening up our opponents, then we let rip in the second half. This could be a tactical ploy.

Just a thought.'"

I think you are right. Our wingers took up so much ball in the 1st half on tackles 1-4. Way more than is usual but made good yards. Widnes on the other hand were sending their forwards up time and time again and also made good yards during the 1st half but clearly tired themselves out.

2nd half we started using our forwards to get good momentum followed by a quick play the ball and some amazing running from dummy half (especially from Govin and McGilveray). The widnes forwards couldn't cope in the middle of the field and we just started to dominate. The pack set the platform up and the backs took advantage with Govin, Ellis and Ridyard pulling all the strings. Add to the good backing up and some admittedly shocking defence and you ended up with a second half massacre.

And so the Centurion Legions routed the Viking horde icon_lol.gif

I lost count of how many widnes players looked overweight.

Crikey guys - yes the second half was outstanding yesterday, as it was at Barrow. But I wouldn't have thought it humanly possible to perform like that for 80 minutes!

I would nt say the 1st half was exactly poor. Mick Nanyn missed 2 goals which would ve made for a 12-16 HT score , hardly poor is it?.

I think the disappointing aspect of the first half is that Widnes managed three tries with bugger all pressure on our line, not to mention the errors from the kicks. Reckon Donlan and McGilvray more than made up for it though!

I bet McGilvray's stats were tremendous, I would hazard a guess at over 150 m gained and at least 14 drives, Maden also drove the ball in well.

I think the true effect of McGilvray and Maden was shown by the energy we had in the forwards because of the wingers taking a big share of the workload.

Was thinking the same myself. I believe we were setting ourselves up for the 2nd half. Of course, we weren't supposed to concede 16 points in the 1st. However the 2nd half went exactly to plan.

Special mention for Armstrong as well, did a lot of hard work in defence and likewise in attack did a lot of the hard yards.

Only just seen this thread , we let one sloppy try in , then suffered two bad ( for us ) bounces of the ball , other than that we easily matched Widnes 1 st half , as Basil said in the aftermath interview , they were not unhappy with the performance

The second half was outstanding , including preventing their one chance to score

A typical Millward type performance with speed from the ptb and offloads from all expected , let's face it he turned ' Balou ' into a ball playing prop at Saints , after Nobby had him as a battering ram for years at Bradford

OK I am lonely but I have watched it 3 times now and have to say thats what I thought too. Watched the Barrow game again too but the driving in by our backs from the PTB is noticeable.

The first half was a 'holding action' where we invited them to throw everything at us, we absorbed it then 'cut loose' poor coaching tactics by them some weird substitutions and player placings at crucial times and no plan B on the game plan, they have some outstanding individual players who are underperforming and have not gelled as a team, a good coach could fix that and thats something they have not got.
