Nice to see the honesty of some of the Widnes fans on the Trust in Widnes forum. One of them says that Widnes defended very poorly and that they were outclassed by Gateshead in the opening part of the match. Interestingly, he also says that the first Widnes try was blatant crossing, the kick through under the posts was clearly offside and that the Flynn try was from a pass a mile forward. He reckons the eventual win is just papering over the cracks at his club. A neutral on there says that Gateshead deserved a bonus point and that the final winning margin slightly flattered Widnes. He felt that the turning point in the game was the sin binning of a Gateshead player after about 60 odd minutes play. Isn't it funny how different fans see the same match so differently? As I have said, it is not Gateshead's attack that is their problem. They would be right near the top of the division if things were purely based on points scored. However, to concede nearly forty points a match isn't great to say the least, but it sounds as if they were a tad unlucky tonight in that department.

Thoroughly enjoyable game for the neutrals at Widnes tonight (and there were a good few of them to bump the crowd up, might I add).

Widnes were utterly abysmal for the first 50 minutes, but take nothing away from Gateshead because they were absolutely superb during that time and either scored or forced a drop out from virtually every set of six in the first half. Andrew Henderson ran the show at hooker to such an extent that Smith got hauled off by Cullen

Thackeray's try from a Webster kick through should never have been allowed in the memory of man, was a good 3 yards offside, but Widnes were just about worthy of victory, if only for the manner of their admittedly impressive comeback. Harsh on Thunder to miss out on a bonus point though.

Also worth mentioning that the crowd was inadvertently bumped up by the 5 of us originally going in the North Stand, only to find that we needed to run back round to the South to join the Gateshead contingent and therefore counting double on the turnstiles Good craic between the fans though and I'm looking forward to our encounters with the Thunder.

i went to the game tonight and it wasnt about gateshead being good in the opening half hour it was how bad widnes were and they were laughable at that (or so i thought whilst getting bad looks from widnes fans)

something is really wrong at widnes and needs addressing quickley but the result tonight just papers over the cracks for the time being

Yes we were all depressed at 24 nil down but showed great team spirit and character to fightback. I would be more worried had we got totally blew of the park for 80 mins then i would be in full agreement with you.


Mark Smith and Cullen dont get on and i wouldnt be surprised to see him gone at the end of the year. That has a major affect currently as he's captain. The rumours are we are sounding out Gleeson from Halifax for next year.

but the tries wernt even good in the 2nd half if were being honest were they. they were just on the back of a blowing gateshead pack and a backline thats slower than treacle

We played a hell of a lot better in the second half and Gateshead couldnt live with us once we upped the tempo and played as a team. They have also just signed 3 aussies who boosted the thunder team.

I can deal with Leyther Matts comments but not yours.

im not saying widnes were bad just as you said when you guys upped the tempo they just couldnt get to grips with how you played

if you would have started off like you finished it could have been a 100-nil scoreline

I thought Widnes moved up through the gears in the second half.

I've been critical of Lee Doran but for me that was his best performance of the season from the games I've seen, his second try was a stormer although I felt the first had a hint of crossing about it.

Dodd's pass out wide for Paddy Flynn must have been three or four metres forward but he charged up to make sure the flight went behind him. That try, just before the hour after some valiant Thunder defence broke their hearts.

Up until the fifty minute mark Luke Branighan for Thunder was the best player on the field but when his forwards lost their punch, so too did he.

Morrison was very good - punching holes while Gannon also played well.

I bet the atmosphere was a bit glum then! I must admit to laughing loudly too, but I'm sure you'd have done the same

I've only seen Gateshead once on the telly against Sheffield and it was a pointathon, do they look useful or were your lot bad?

Rumours of Gleeson going to Widnes and Penky goin to Leigh.......whats going on at Fax - if these come off they could struggle next season if a couple more go?

Who cares if some of Widnes`s try`s were a bit dodgy......the ref gave em and they won, well done Widnes - a great come back.
