| And here is an astonishing fact which will come as perhaps little surprise to regular readers of this board but Leigh stores sell more peanut butter and celery than any comparative size town in the UK and even Western Europe.

Forgot about Iceland. Add that to the list.

Believe Asda are looking to start opening their own versions of Tesco Express/Sainsbury's Local etc so that might be a (large) option for Netto? Would be daft to knock down summat that must only be about 15 years old.'"
As you say, it would be a large express and if I remember right ASDA said they would only open them below a certain size, they have also agreed to sell off a number of the Netto stores so watch this space.

| Quote: The Kevster! "I personally think Sainsbury's will bite the dust once Morrisons and Tesco open. They were struggling early last year and had people on short time as I know people who work there. I understood the new Morrisons will follow the plan of the original Tesco development on LSV whereby it will be on stilts allowing the car park to also go underneath the store.
My other half works at the Ince store so if I get any more info I'll post it on here.'"
I work for sainsburys head office, but I keep a close eye on the store as it's where I started off.
Leigh as a 'site' including the petrol station does very well indeed.
Personally I think that the tesco and morrisons will have a greater negative effect on Asda.
It's incredibly rare for sainsburys to shut supermarkets, even the ones that don't trade that well, its all about market share...
On a separate note I don't think the OFT will allow asda to take all of the Netto stores and launch them as food shops. So the netto in Leigh could go to either another retailer/developer or could be converted into an Asda home store. Possibly.

| i hope someone is looking into the possibility of tying into some kind of partenership with morrissons as regards sponsorship.
there was a consultation in the library a while back when tesco were supposed to be going on the sports village, and i put this to one of their represensitives and they took a lot of details about what kind of things could be done.
i dont know the ins and outs of budgets etc,but i put it forward they could sponsor the junior team at the club (not sure what age group it was at the time).
just somthin to ponder.

| having dealt with Morrisons in the past (this topic was covered some weeks ago) I can catagorically say they are the meanest sods walking with regards to sponsorship but yes it is being 'dealt with' as are lots of other ways to boost revenue

| I think it'd be far more beneficial to try and get an arrangement for Morrison's to sell club merchandise and the like rather than trying to persuade them to spend probably their entire advertising budget on a season's worth of shirt sponsorship.

That idea was being mooted by the CEO last season. It would make sense to try and sell merchandise through a large supermarket - far more 'footfalls' (or is it 'feetfalls'?) than at the former O'neills shop.

Although ironically there would surely have been an increased football at O'Neills had there been a Morrison's across the road at the time...

| The number of supermarkets in the area gives you a strong indication of the huge catchment area of the town of Leigh and its surrounding areas, which is why we should never give up our own RL dreams.
As for the Netto stores it will all depend on the mergers and monopolies commision verdict. Either way the Netto logo in the UK will be consigned to the skip in early 2011.
