Quote: A.N.Other Viking "Turley was good but didn't play at a high level for long enough to be considered GREAT.'"

=========================================
Anyone who scored as many points as N. Turley did in his short career
is special no matter what level of RL they play at he was a points machine
Mick Nanyn is the same absolute brill when it comes to point scoring
Turley in my opinion is the best full back ive ever seen at Leigh and ive been watching them since 63 Dave Eck was good as was C . Johnson but Turley was a very special player and a great pity is career was cut short
some of the trys he scored for Leigh where outstanding and he had a habit of scoring trys when we had our backs to the wall, it will be a long time before we see someone as good as N Turley in a Num 1 shirt here at Leigh

Quote: mishmash "Don't forget Neil Turley was voted into the dream team

Make no mistake I was a big fan of Turley but for he to be voted in to a Leigh dream team ahead of full back who all whilst playing for Leigh was regarded as one of the greatest of his generation, played full back in a GB side that won the World cup final, toured Australia with GB, helped Leigh to major domestic success, to countless final appearances and who previous to that had signed for the club for a then world record fee no less...

Is I would say comical in the extreme icon_lol.gif

To be fair in these dream teams, they are always dominated by players in 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s as there are probably not as many older people around to give tales of the likes of the Ledgard's of this world other tan perhaps a few former team-mates.

I prefer to call them generation players.

Neil Turley, Tim Street, Paul Rowley, Adam Bristow, even Dave and Andy Ruane are mine whereas others would say Drummond, Woods, Pyke, Wilkinson and others would speak of Eckersley, Ashcroft, Murphy and Smethurst.

My grandads raved over the likes of Ledgard, Egan, Robinson, Owen and Trevor Allen.

Agree 100% with all of that.

Mick was great..............................
But just remind everyone on here ..MICK,S PLAYING STATS
AGAINST NEIL,S...............
No comparison Turley was a sensation when it came to scoring points
at a guess i would say Neil Turley in his short career scored more points than any other full back in the British game at any level ,how anyone can say he was,nt the best full back seen in a Leigh shirt over the past 40yrs
is madness brilliant player..

Neil Turley was an excellent player but I don`t think he`s been our best FB in the last 40 years ,but we all differ in opinions........IMO if he`d have been a bit more fortunate with the injuries , then over a more prolonged period at a higher level we may have given him this accolade.

He was the player who got us into Superleague.Do you remember the Challenge cup against Whitehaven ? We were 8 points down and a minute to go but we won. Lots of Leythers had done the Wigan walk by then. We got Wigan next round robbed 16-30. icon_lol.gif

Appearances 119
Substitute 3
Tries 132
Goals 479
Drop Goals 15
Points 1501

Tries in a season - 55 (club and WORLD record).
Goals in a season - 187 (club record).
Points in a season - 468 (club record breaking his own previous record 40icon_cool.gif.
Points in a game 42 (club record).
Tries in a game 6 (joint club record).

5th All Time Club Try Scorers (only one in top 20 averaging more than a try a game).
3rd All Time Club Goal Scorers.
3rd All Time Club Points Scorers.

NT was worth an average 12 points start for every appearance he made!!

I think those stats speak for themselves........and before anyone starts spouting about those points not being scored at the highest level - the vast majority came from his boot....and they are just as hard to put over playing at Batley as they are at Wembley!!

Neil Turley was the best natural born player to pull on a Leigh shirt since Woody.

I don`t think anyone`s disputing that.......but natural and best are significantly different.
