I just want to make one thing clear. This is not about making money for Leighlife, it's about offering a service to the club and it's fans and hopefully help towards generating some income for the club.

We have had this radio on Leighlife for a couple of years and have offered help in the past but no one at the club was ever interested before so the radio was basically just switched off. All the technology is already there, it's just the memory space that needs paying for and hopefully we will be able to find a way of doing this.

Luckily for us, the season is over so we have a good few months to come up with something.

We also offered the service to local bands, scriptwriting groups etc where they could do a recording (or do it live if they were brave enough) and we'd play it for them but we never really got a response so switched the radio off.

I have to say that, having volunteered to run a Communications project, I couldn't believe my luck, when you good folk at LeighLife turned up. You have opened up all sorts of exciting possibilities to project the name, product and brand of the Centurions.

Just so long as you don't all keep talking 'tech-speak' to me - you must have realised what effect that has on me?!

Love the LeighLife initiative. While we as supporters can all view it there is the added bonus that it's not just preeching to the converted which is something the club has been guilty of over the years.

I finally feel that the club has realised it has to change, be more open and accept that the fans are more than just people who stand on the terraces. We are in essence the lifeblood of this club and together we can help make it bigger and stronger.

Whilst looking further afield for new fans, it is very important that we still 'preach to the converted' too. As a fan, I've been saying for ages that we must be communicated with. (and look where I've ended up now! ) It may sound 'corny' but Trevor's view of the fans as 'shareholders' is like a breath of fresh air.

A ' Census ' carried out at a match early next season to give us the necessary information and contact details of our existing fan base is a necessity IMO

We're having a meeting with the College Media Studies guy at the end of October, Steve. I'll put that to him and ask if they can help. If we pick the 'right' opposition, there will be little danger of confusing away fans with Leythers.

Well I was just waiting to be asked (but I wanted to join in before I died so I decided to invite myself instead).

What you will need for streaming radio is a server with good bandwidth, I can look into this. It would be a useful services for leythers who live away from Leigh. Not sure how much you could charge, 20 quid for a season? I am sure the Canada based leythers would go for it. I have never written an android app, but I suppose I would have a better chance than most! 32k bits per second stream would be enough, so x 200 say = 6.4M bits per second. Which means you need at least 10M bits per second upload speed, which you can get with Virgin or BT Infinity. Will do some more calculations tomorrow when I have not been quaffing wine. Best bet is rent a server with a fast link, run a linux server to do the streaming that links to leighlife somehow if possible.

I listen to UK radio in the car (in Germany) via an android app, so this stuff does work....

Sorry if that is a bit techy. I should have more time to help in a couple of weeks time (moving house). I know a bit about setting up linux servers and stuff, so would be better at that side of it than app programming, but I could give it a go, never done Java stuff though (which is what android apps are based on), although when you can program in assembler and low level C it can't be that difficult! It may be that leighlife can get a better deal for a webserver than they have now with more bandwidth. The bandwidth will only be needed once a week, so the total MB usage may not be so high so could still get a cheap webserver deal. Will email you tomorrow hopefully.
