Far away from being my era and being able to relate to it but 'm still finding it a fascinating read

I didn't like the style of listing the teams every two minutes when it was bang in the middle of a story. I like stats but not in that sort of format. I felt it infringed too much on the book but there were undoubtedly some good stories in it and I would still recommend the book to anyone who remembers that era.

One of the best rugby books I read was the book on Andy Greg while Maurice Bamford's book on himself was a very good read too which is why again I was a little disappointed with the Kev Ashcroft book because Maurice's was such a good read.

TBH it is the first RL book I have read so may be why I am so hooked but I have only ever watched the modern era and as such never seen a competitive scrum other than maybe one when a team will push to win the ball evey 5 years.

It's that reason I am so interested the stories of the biff in the scrum and being allowed by the ref on most occasions when you can't fart in a scrum these days without being penalised!

If anyone can recommend any better RL books I would love to read them!

dean sampsons is a really good one as well

the "incident" with an aussie international is well documented, doesn't actually name the said player, but i know who he is, and he later played for a club in this counrty icon_whisper.gif

I've featured that particular book, on the 'Touch of Humour' page, in the programme for Whitehaven, on Sunday! So, if there are any Leythers who haven't read it.................

without doubt the finest rugby league book i have read is

the forbidden game...which is the untold story of french rugby league

it tells how rugby union collobarated with the nazi backed vichy government to all but destroy the game in france.at the time league was threatining to dwarf unuon in popularity.

at times it reads like a thriller

I enjoyed most of the book, but interest waned a bit during the Salford and Warrington takes, moreso becuase I could not relate to most of the the players etc.

The best bit for me was the 71 Wembley final, reading about things behind the scenes and getting then huge lump in my throat when he wrote about the game being won in the tunnel when they saw a sea of red and white at the opposite end of the stadium, and then 100000 people from Boothstown to Leigh turning out for the victory parade.

I'd swap my wife to have that experience in my lifetime, but dont tell her I said that. icon_wink.gif

Yeah I agree with that, I found that I was just skipping over those bits - it did retract from the stories but apart from that I thought it was great.

Saint or Sinner was the best one Ive read, I heard Alex has a new one out soon, anyone know when, because I cant wait.
It would be great if we could write an no holds barred story of Leigh RLFC, it will ahve some interesting stories to tell. icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif
In our Super League year we said we could write a soap about the club and its people. icon_lol.gif

Saint or Sinner was AJM's second book. Murphy's Law was the first. Not read the former but enjoyed the second.
