| Quote: ItchyandScratchy "I totally agree with your thoughts re this issue. Success brings bigger support for Leigh which is always needed. But at the same time there is the possibility that it attracts followers who give the Club a bad image. Anyone who looks at the Club both on and off the field can see that the level of professionalism has improved beyond anything we have seen before. We are a SL Club in every way. However, the fans also need to match this level of professionalism through their general behaviour and conduct on match days. At the end of the day we all represent Leigh Centurions in whatever capacity that we can. Okay, most of us are not on the Board of Directors or some other important role, and don't have a say in important decisions. But we are a part of the Club in our own small way. We are ambassadors for our great Club. If we behave badly then it reflects not just on the individual responsible for such behaviour, but it also gives Leigh Centurions an equally bad image. The Flute Song is something that should be stuffed in 'Room 101' with immediate effect. Not only is it totally out of date and irrelevant in today's society, it is rude and offensive. Disliking Wigan RL is one thing, but the IRA too? It's not like the IRA are currently in the news, although I am sure they still exist. It's also a crap song. The chances are that if you asked one of the 'vocalists' who sing that song what they know about the IRA, or even what the initials stand for, they wouldn't know a thing. Rubbish like this, as you rightly point out, rubs off on our kids also and sets a bad example of what it is to be a proper well behaved supporter. The new songs that we have recently adopted are much better and hopefully the fans will stick with these.
I went to the Wigan game a few weeks ago and the same old hate chanting and general abuse reared its ugly head again. Friendly banter is one thing, but some of the abuse that was shouted at the Wigan fans, albeit they had no chance of hearing it because they were too far away, was just pathetic. The people in question were adults and I wonder if they ever realise just how bad they appear to others who were there just to watch what was a good tough game of RL.
I think that the best that Derek can do regarding the issue of bad behaviour by some fans is to make a press release through the main Leigh Centurions website on his Blog page, or through the Club matchday programme. Fans need to understand the role that they play by supporting the Club and the negative impact that poor behaviour has. We are being watched by the RFL and we need to show that we deserve to be at the top table for all the right reasons. It's not all about getting behind the team on the field. The tannoy message warning about bad language is something that the Club will have to maintain to show to the RFL and other visiting Clubs that it is something they are trying to sort out. Derek can only do so much and he is doing plenty from what I can see. We all have a responsibility to project a positive image of our great Club and most of us thankfully do.'"
An excellent response to this thread.
I take my 85 year old mother to all the matches - we have season tickets in the west stand - I find it an embarrassment with some of the chanting which is quite frankly boring.
Many of the new chants are funny and sound great even the dodgy rendition of "something good"

Unfortunately this seems to be the latest trendy generic football song that has made it's way into the game, just stick to 'you're not very good' or 'can we play you every week', same message just not as offending to some.

| Does the East Stand have a sound shield in it to stop the chants from the North Stand?

| So some on here respond with, other clubs do it so we will to, that makes it OK then does it? Whenever has two wrongs made something OK and acceptable.
People have also posed the question what can Derek do about it, well he could appeal to the songbirds to tame it down somewhat, then if they have any respect for him for what he has done for the club they might just take heed, then again.............

| They will say it costs money to open East Stand, but I have been on opposition websites and quite a lot of opposition fans are not happy with being stuck behind the posts. I think the extra cost of opening East would be offset by extra away fans attending. I also would think some Leigh fans might fancy a change of scenery as well.

| Don't think its just a case of lets open the East. There will be stadia regulations in place as in the East can only be applied for if either North or South are full/reaching max capacity.

| Quote: Markypants "Warrington also chanted at Gaz Hock, but telling the north stand to stop swearing isn't going to stop the issue . Personally I think the North Stand has been vocal and has helped the players raise their game in recent weeks. Some of it is unnecessary but it's not going to go away . What happened to the Icelandic Chant ?'"
Yea what has happened to the Icelantic Chant, done right its very intimidating and I think we got it just about right against Hudds in the middle 8's last year.

| Being a Westander, I can honestly say it doesn't bother me,I never swear in life so wouldn't do it at Sports games, but we are not talking about a few fans here, we have around 500- 1000 in the North Stand singing the Flute Song,or the Savile song so they are popular, now I acknowledge Derek has done some great things at the LSV since taking over, but he can't feed the North Stand with 5 loaves and 2 small fish, neither can he stop the North Stand singing these songs, we have tannoy announcements every game letting us know that foul and abusive language will not be tolerated, but what is the answer?Eject all the guilty fans it would look empty after, it simply can't be done, swearing isn't nice for kids to hear,as for Women they sometimes swear worse than men, there is NO solution, let's concentrate on watching good Rugby, and stop expecting even Derek to perform miracles.

| The OP clearly has a point - I personally find it embarrassing at times, however, as has been said, it's the nature of sport and you hear similar at plenty of grounds.
With regards to children, I take my 11 year old grandson and we sit pretty near to the north stand so he takes it all in, and he never says a word about it - in this day and age sadly they hear similar in day to day life

| Anyone travelling by public transport knows that no word is any longer taboo to the younger generations, barring possibly the N word. Bongser wonders if this is because the use of the latter carries the threat of prosecution. Bongser was caned when at school for accidentally using the word "dick" within a teacher's hearing. The European Convention on Human Rights put a stop to that sort of deterrent and thus ensured that it is every human's right to impinge on everyone else's should they so choose. Brexit won't change that, the damage is done. But if you're looking for somewhere to lay the blame...

| From personal experience, I know that the club is very sensitive to any damage to its image - especially with the RFL. I honestly believe that the song in question does damage said image. How you prevent it, I've no idea!

| The Watcher has also been attending Leigh games for over 50 years and he loves the industrial language used in the songs of the North Stand. When The Watcher was taken by his father to the rugby, it was part of the thrill of the occasion to hear loud booming voices scolding the opposition or referee using swear words. However The young Watcher knew only to well that if he ever repeated any of the very fruity words he had heard on the terraces he would have got a belt. Language is ever developing, don't be upset by swear words, grow a pair of balls & enjoy it, rugby is a tough sport played by tough hard men & watched in general by working class folk looking to release a bit of energy after a week at work. For The Watcher carry on swearing.
