The RFL monitors salary cap compliance 'live' these days, and will not register a player if his salary payments, inc. bonuses, would take the club over the salary cap. Derek's talk (and it's only been intimated at by a regional newspaper) is designed to pressure the RFL in to raising the Championship salary cap.'"
Well said Michael. You would have thought folk might have grasped that by now. Obviously not.

| Could you seriously see the RFL deducting 29 points off ANY SL club, or Leigh for that matter?
They were given the chance when Wigan dodged relegation by rorting the cap the year Cas went down.

For the kind of cheating that would be required to break the current system of a live salary cap, I would expect the RFL to take the matter very seriously and I would anticipate serious consequences from other authorities. This is not like the previous system where accidental and minor breaches could happen easily, to break the salary cap now requires deception.

I wish I had your faith in the RFL. Barrow? HMRC would not be involved if Leigh just broke RFL rules.
Of course I do not know if he actually said he would break the cap but it a real possibility when you consider his other outbursts. You also must believe he did if you know why he said it. He told you his reasons did he or are you a mindreader?

Wigan's breach was neither minor nor accidental. Cas were hard done by.

I think what he actually said was that he needed to make signings now, rather than wait till the end of the 8s and confirmation of what division and salary cap would apply (this was before the Bradford game).
So, question is if Bradford or Wakefield want to make signings before the million pound game, what salary cap will the RFL be holding them to when approving the registrations?

I don't think it's difficult for the RFL to check payments made and salaries issued match up with what is stated upon signing, especially in hen oh on alert.
As for Derek's reasons - it's speculation on my part, but putting pressure on the RFL is the most likely reason for the comments.

That is a very good point.
Does anybody know the answer, including the RFL

Simply put a clause in the contract stating the contract is enforceable if the team are in Super League. If the team are not in Super League either the player is released or on a lower level salary. These things can be planned for.

Few players of the calibre required would sign a contract that leaves their future up in the air until such time as most clubs have finished doing business or don't have a great deal of their playing budgets left.
