The only way the RFL will review transfer policy is when they decide to change which hand they're sitting on most heavily.

He’s also right, but it will not change until the powers that be decide to do what is best and right for Rugby League, not just Super League.

Can you be specific about what the powers that be should do here?

As Lam says, make it not possible for a SL team to poach a player mid season from a Champ side, by just buying out his contract. Fair enough to take an option for that player at the start of the next season, but mid-season in simply not ok unless all parties are agreed. I also don’t think allowing approaches to players when the season is less than half done is OK either.

I get that players are going to want to play Super League and I can respect that they want to get that guranteed. From what Derek has said to myself on Twitter, Asiata has an option to stay for another year if he wants it. I imagine this is the same for most of the players. Its not me investing the money in the squad but i would like to see our top players being signed on new contracts. We have got them over here and we have seen what they have got so now it is time to show our full commitment to them. Asiata, Macdonald, Aekins, Amone, Mellor, Brand ( who is progressing at ridiculous speed). Then start to pick some of the decent British players up from 1st May. If we go up then we have a squad capable and if we don't, Toulouse won't touch us. Like I said, its not my money to play with but this is what I would like to see happen. I do however think we will lose some of the mentioned and I won't blame them for wanting to cement their place in Super League.

And that's the problem. Folk are sore about Leigh always being a shop window for the vultures of Pooperleague.

It’s not that simple though, if Leigh go up you have reduced quota numbers, 5 players only IIRC. so if you sign one of these players now on a longer term contract and they get injured to the point where they are out a significant amount of time in 2023, you end up with a very expensive lame duck (excuse the pun) who is taking up a quota spot that you could have used on another player. We have the same issue at Fev.

It is very fine lines about giving out long term contracts.

IBRC, the much vaunted Paterika Vaivai got long-term crocked early in his stint at Leigh. Derek came to a financial agreement with said gentleman and the former's contract was terminated and his quota slot freed up and he could go home.

James Clare was a different kettle of fish though - "Whilst us is out us'll see out us contract and get all us dough fer nowt."

South Pacifics seem better bets when viewed from that (albeit small sample) angle.
