Hi all,

We are working hard again to get the players association up and running again!

We want all players who have represented our club to be part of the association. It doesn't matter if a player has played 1 game or 100 games, we are part of the history of Leigh Centurions.

Hopefully, in the not too distant future, we can announce the heritage numbers of all the players who have played for Leigh since 1895! What Mike Latham and his team have put together is amazing and I think supporters will love this!

I've been privy to the list and it has been quite emotional going through the names and seeing pictures of some of the players. I hope the Leigh public embrace this and the club takes the opportunity to celebrate our heritage. Hopefully we can look at getting something together for schools to study in their 'local history' topic.

We have created a twitter account: @leighcpa which I will update and add pictures of players. If you have any pictures, please email them to me: leighcpa@gmail.com

Likewise, if you know any player who has worn the shirt, please ask them to email me and I can keep them updated about the association, I believe it will only be successful if players support it!

Regards

Jason Donohue

Jason,

Good luck mate. I'm really looking forward to reading about/seeing some of my heroes from the past. Still in awe of many of them!

Alan.

Are the heritage numbers continued right through to the current first team? It would be a nice touch if the numbers were printed on the playing strip above the badge or on the sleeve like England cricket do. Just adds a bit of class and each player would remember their number. Makes the debut and handing over of the first team jersey a bit more personal.

Keith, drop us an email: leighcpa@gmail.com

The heritage numbers go up to 31st July 2013 - I'm sure Mike Latham can update it from there - must be easier than 1895!

How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home winemaking course, and I forgot how to drive?:icons077e_files/4864-863FALH-msnicons.jpg

Quote: mr. chairman "I understand why it's called the players association , but I would love to be involved but I'm not an ex player . What I am is an ex coach at academy level and 1st team , this also applies to my old mate nobby turley and a lot of others who coached at the club but never played for the club
I played one game or more at Salford , Huyton , Blackpool , Wigan but I don't want to be at there past players events , my heart is with Leigh always will be'"

That`s a very valid point you make about ex coaches. You`ve been part of the fabric of the club and fully deserve to be granted equal status IMHO.

Of course coaches have been an important part of the club - without them we wouldn't have got picked!
Obviously it is a players association, however, we have discussed the idea of having 'associate' members. How we do this we haven't decided but it is something we are thinking about!
Who would we class as an associate member? Do we just include coaches? What about strength & fitness coaches, medical staff? (My wife Karen spent nearly 10 years as physio!) It is something we need to get right.

We are open to ideas, so please send us some! leighcpa@gmail.com

What do you think a players association should do?

What about people like Brian Bowman who was an administrator/chairman??

People of this ilk have done a lot for our great club.

By the way, I saw Brian in the boardroom on Sunday following the batley game. Think he missed the back end of last season.

A players association should be what it says in the title, a players association. Coaches could be honorary members without voting rights etc. I would leave it at past coaches only, once you include all and sundry it dilutes the purpose of the association.

Brian is a honouree life member and part of the furniture at our club and needs no invitation.

Brian had a few games away from the club towards the back end of last season but that is now the past and the great man is back were he belongs thankfully.

I shared a drink with Brian on Sunday who was present along with his lovely wife Marion, John Massey and John Stringer just to name a few people in his company.

He believes we will top the league this season and if he says so who am I to argue as he's forgotten more about RL than a baby like me.

Welcome back Brian more great news for Leigh Centurions.

Quote: mr. chairman "Hope I've not opened a can of worms . Honestly I would rather back off rather than cause an upset . I have lots of mates all ex players , amateur and pro and there is nothing like it in the world than getting together and having a good old belly laugh , a good chat and a few beers .

The past players association dinners were fantastic , players , ex players , coaches , ex coaches , admin staff and past admin and supporters and ex supporters all having a good night together and raise a few bob'"

I wouldn't have thought so Keith this club under our Directorship is inclusive not exclusive.

I'm sure the past players is destined for success and any former coaches of the club are also integral figures in the make up of our clubs history and would be welcomed by myself and my fellow directors.

You are welcome always pal.

I presume the players association is going to be working with the Heritage Numbers when that is released (should be very interesting and I'm looking forward to it), that should be one of the main purposes of the players association, keeping the history of the club alive. I think that should be the key to associate membership, how important people were to the history of the club, in 20 or 50 or 100 years people will want to know that Paul Rowley was the coach that got us into Super League and John Roddy was the chairman with an excellent board round him that secured the future of the club in the top flight, I don't think there'll be quite as much interest in who was water carrier or ball boy at the time (despite the essential job they do).

With all due respect there are circumstances where there will be interest in who the water carrier was...there's one at the club now, probably been there for 15 years+, I wouldn't like to put a number on the amount of lifelong friendships he's made at the club.
