James Braddock (Cinderella Man) won the heavyweight championship of the world against all the odds against Max Baer who had killed his last opponent. Considered little more than a journeyman fighter, Braddock was hand-picked by Baer's handlers because he was seen as an easy payday for the champion.Instead, on June 13, 1935, at Madison Square Garden Bowl, Braddock won the Heavyweight Championship of the World as the 10-to-1 underdog in one of the most stunning upsets in boxing history.

Wimbledon beat Liverpool at Wembley against all the odds.

Sheffield beat Wigan at Wembley in another huge upset.

Leigh beat Leeds 24 - 7 in 1971 the biggest upset in Challenge Cup finals. Leigh were massive underdogs.

If you have the right mentality, the right spirit, a burning desire to win inside you, and a vocal partisan crowd, you can raise your game to a new level and win.

Leeds will come out all guns blazing hoping to blow us away in the first 20 minutes. Leigh have to hang in there and then anything can happen and the longer the game goes on in a tight cup contest then it's anyones game. But for Childs, we would have beaten Catalans (the then form team) last year.

Just believe. COME ON LEIGH!!!!!!!!

Can't help but imagine images of these sporting upsets to some rousing music as a montage, would be great to see something like that on the screen before kick off

I can see Claire Balding on Saturday, before the Wigan v Saints game, reporting how Leigh caused one of the greatest upsets, yet again, in the Challenge Cup history by defeating the World Club Champions, Leeds, by 25 - 24 after extra time to march into the semi finals!!

I hope the Leigh players are laughing in their faces and goading them at every tackle just winding them up. They're only human. They make mistakes. They get angry.....It's 13 men against 13 men on the field of play, anything can happen..........COME ON LEIGH!!!!

I am nervous but excited and just cant think how the players must be feeling - good luck lads, play your socks off, give it 100% and remember always proud to be a Leyther. I hope Ben Thaler does a good job as referee tonight!!!!!

The Watcher knows the bookies got it wrong back in 71, we were only 4pts behind Leeds in the table after about 34 games, there was never that much difference in the teams class & it still annoys The Watcher to this day that Leeds were such odds on favorites, they should not have been. However today is very different.

Was telling a workmate today about us winning the Cup in '71, he's from Scotland and then told me a story about how his newly-promoted football team, Partick Thistle beat Celtic in the Scottish League Cup Final in the year 1971(!) - the year after Celtic had appeared in a European Cup Final. Not only did they beat them, they were 4-0 up at Half Time.

Correct today it is 9c and cloudy. May 15 1971 was sunny and 29c. icon_smile.gif

All we expect from our lads today is 100% and if they do that (which I am sure they will) at least I will be happy.

Tbh if I know the bloke opposite playing ANYTHING is better than me the last thing I do is wind them up or goad them, often the best way to beat a superior opponent is to deflate them, offer nothing in the way of impetus, an environment they'd really rather not be in and try to catch them cold. Going toe to toe in a wind up merchant contest with the Rhinos is honestly the last thing you want to do. It's all well and good getting up for something yourself but to wind and give reasoning to a far superior opponent is suicide.

As for the op nice sentiment however I chuckle at the Child's comment as the referee had no bearing on that game other than be a bit finicky to which he pinged the french equally as much for offences. I'd love to know what part of the officiating you think cost you the game; humour me.

when they clearly bounced the ball over the line and a try was awarded should of been a knock on!

Something I hope doesn't happen again tonight with the lack of video ref (the only tie in the quarters without one!)

I don't recall seeing a knock on but anyway surely that's the responsibility of the in goal judge rather than the referee? That's what they're there for. I genuinely don't remember a knock on try unless it was towards the away end, in which case I fail to see how anyone else accurately saw it either

1971 Still hurts, but like has been said before Leigh were a very good team that year and although Leeds were still in that great period from circa 1967,it was getting to the end of that era,and Alex used it to perfection in his pre game talks.Leigh had a very good side ,and no excuses for having Shoey out never to play again and also missing Batten and Alan Smith

It's going to be a mullering unfortunately. Great exposure for Leigh though and I still think that this is what's great about the CC.

Go easy on your players in the aftermath - don't forget - Leeds are World Champions.
