It has been a magnificent effort by everybody involved in Leigh East. They have fought off the efforts by the Wigan Council to take over their Clubhouse bar which, if they had been successful, could have been the end for the Club.

Leigh East, through hard negotiations by their lawyer, hard working committee members, a contribution from Andy Burnham and the thousands of people who signed a petition, have seen off the Council and Leigh East will continue to run their Club house in the same professional manner they have been running it for the past 5/6 years.

Well done to all concerned. The Council will have got something out of it, there's no doubt about that, but the compromise seems to have the approval of both parties.

Sorry, thought the thread said it all. Leigh East have retained the control of the clubhouse and bar. The Council have accepted a compromise and East keep their bar.

It did to a certain extent, but I didn't want to get giddy before an official statement. Your comment about the council no doubt getting something etc...just wanted to get the full facts. After 6 years and information overload, some true, some not, and to a certain extent disbelief that Leigh East have won after all this time

Lets hang fire for the press release and the ink to dry before we crack open the champagne.

If there's ink on a tenancy agreement that Easts can live with, then it's great news. If nothing has been signed yet, then given the past performance of the council it may turn out that noting gets signed.

Fantastic result for Leigh East and congratulations to Keith and everyone involved in this from Leigh East. A real David v Goliath, which shows what can be done by team work.
I hope that every Wigan Councillor who has been involved in this shameful affair has a long, hard look at themselves, particularly if they are taking their children or grandchildren this weekend to participate in sport organised by amateur clubs regardless of what that sport may be.
Where would we be without all the hard work of these unsung heroes?

The Leader of Wigan Council, Lord Peter Smith, saiddiscussion with Leigh East Rugby Club about the future operations of the pavilion at Leigh Sports Village. We are very pleased to have reached an agreement....oh really Lord Peter !!!!
