| A lot of people believe that since wetherspoons opened in leigh it has 'sucked the life' out of leigh for me once the leigh arms was sold by pete and julie it became almost a derelict building overnight. Leigh Arms was the centre of a great night out in leigh which for me is now at best an average night out where alot of people will just sit in wetherspoons for the majority of the night..............is it then worth the risk? Nobodies done anything yet with it but with the support i believe it cud be almost on a par with wot it once was (never quite the same)but still bring a better atmosphere to a night out round town

| Do people still go around town??
No restaurants, crap pubs, crap ale, overpriced, chav city, scrotes everywhere.
Thought most of us went to Manchester for a decent day/night out.
When I do have a bevvy in town Wetherspoons is the best place, clean, no music, well priced, no chavs, decent ale and choice of ale.
The town has gone to pot mate, let it RIP.

| Not really the time to be buying and doing up a pub though.
As the B&Q adverts say, "In is the new Out".
People just aren't get out as much as they were so can't see it being worth a risk in the current financial climate, regardless of the situation around Leigh Town Centre.

| Got to agree with the posts.
When I first started going out you could go to loads of places and have a great night. Avenue,Ruebens,Globe,Boardwalk,Spinning Jenny,Leigh Arms,Eagle and Child and George and Dragon to name but a few.
Now if you go out where is there? Wetherspoons - good cheap ale without the threat of a good kicking.
Pulp - Ive never felt so threatened in my life!!!!!
George and Dragon - no atmosphere
Bliss - cant get near the bar but good music.
Goose - lifeless
Cafe Stella - not bad
Add all this up and it really does look like a e night out. Hopefully people will look at this before they buy the Arms. It is going pretty cheap tho....

| However much non-smokers disagree, IMHO the introduction of the smoking ban has done more harm to the pub/club trade in this country than any credit crunch, or supermarket cheap beer ever could....

You thinking of becoming a Publican then Mr C??
When are you going to find the time to run a pub??
Having been there / done that - first up and last to bed 7 days a week - you can have it - cheap or no cheap its not worth the rewards today!

| Never go around Leigh at all now. Pub trade is dying and the government doesn't give a rats ass.
If you're not an eating establishment you've got little chance of surviving nowadays.

All very true I'm afraid. Unless a pub serves food and gets a good reputation it will struggle. 8-10 pubs are closing each week in the UK.
One of the answers would be to reduce duty on alcohol served in pubs and make it more expensive buying it in the Supermarket and off licence. It would help to support the pub trade and also help to cut out teenage binge drinking. Sadly this is very unlikely to ever happen.

| im very greatful 4 all these reply's, i remember when i worked there b4 we were in super league when we were in super league and after. When i was working in there leigh rugby not just centurions but east, miners leigh rugby union were the predominent drinkers in there if this cud be brought back it wud be great and i think all it wud take is a bit of community support from everybody(Drinkers in general, the teams mentioned and most of all i believe the local police who have a very difficult job as leigh is a rough town). All these teams still drink in leigh i see them all the time and one of them are always in the pub i currently have. I grew up in that pub working and i hate seeing it how it is id luv to restore it but if people dont have faith in the premises and the town in general why save it, but wud it be worth a try thats wot im asking?????? I wud luv it to be wot it was as a pub and as a town

| heres my two penneth worth...
leigh arms gone for good i would imagine, theres been too many false starts in the last three years..
wetherspoons baffles me, its not that cheap anymore, yet their clientele think it is, cos most stay in there all night, and dont know any different
however, i feel this is the REAL problem...
a lot of the youngsters of today are not fussed about hitting the town, a good nights entertainment for them is pratting about on facebook all evening, or playing computer games......
also, if todays young 'uns have any disposable income, priority will be to top up their mobile phone

| Your only chance with any pub is if you own it and can buy your ale wherever you choose.
Leigh arms could be a success IF you buy it and are free to run a quality real ale pub with character.
Was talking to a landlord a few weeks ago who was trying to buy his pub off Punch, he had calculated his ale cost would drop £2000 a week!!!!

| Just like Chequers (sp) - that would be fantastic - but would people go?
The little italian (with good food) which opened for a couple of months (near to the G+D)soon had to close due to a lack of business
