Leigh legend Trevor Cogger has given a ringing endorsement to the Centurions’ signing of Fuifui Moimoi and says his impact on the English game will be felt far outside the boundaries of WN7.
Cogger, a hugely popular guest player from Western Suburbs in 1985-86 was speaking on Leigh Centurions TV at Leigh Sports Village.
He returned to the town to follow the progress of his son Jack playing for the Australian Schoolboys side and met up with many old colleagues from Leigh’s second division championship-winning side of nearly 30 years ago.
Cogger, who holds the all-time record for most Wests appearances in all grades, is still a keen student of the NRL in Australia and is delighted that Moimoi is following in his footsteps in playing for Leigh.
“It’s great that Leigh have secured Fui’s services,” Cogger said. “It’s great for Fui and great for Leigh and he’ll fit in well with the atmosphere of the English game.
“In Australia not many teams get loud vocal support but Fui gets that on a personal basis and that leads onto great support for Parramatta. The Leigh fans are passionate and love their Rugby League and he’ll be made to feel at home here straight away.
“Fui’s 35 but he’s still a big name and he knows how to play footy. He’ll be as an asset not only to Leigh but the English game. I’m sure Fui will continue on from his great performances back home and that Leigh continue on from the great season they had in 2014.
“It’s a fantastic signing- one that has certainly made the news in Australia. I’ll be following his progress with great interest.
“I only played for two clubs- Wests and Leigh- and my biggest regret was that I never came back to play for Leigh for a second season. I loved my time at Leigh and it’s been fantastic to come back and see the great facilities at the Leigh Sports Village and see how well the team is doing.
“The welcome I’ve had has been amazing and people can’t do enough for me. I hope it won’t be nearly 30 years before I come back again.”
Leigh Centurions TV is available on a subscription service for £32 per annum. More details on the Leigh Centurions website at www.leighcenturions.com

| Good player as Cogger was, and whilst I endorse his views about Moimoi, I'd hardly describe him (Cogger) as a "legend."

| Editorial or in this case producers licence Alan In my opinion every player who pulled/pulls on the Leigh RFC/Centurions shirt is a Legend and whilst I am the nominated (notice nominated not self appointed something I never wanted and will relinquish at any time the BOD wish to replace me) leader of LC TV the production licence is mine.

| Trevor is one of Wests biggest ever legends, who spent a season with us that he seemed to enjoy and I recall him as being fearless for such a small guy

| John Woods is a Leigh legend and Trevor Cogger is a Leigh legend. That sentence isn't factually correct or 'legend' has been redefined.

Only in half the sentence, reffy.
Maurice may well be right when he describes Cogger as a Wests legend, but I still can't elevate him to that status for his time spent at Leigh.

Alan I totally agree with you , we have had many great and many good players at Leigh , over the years ,not many can be classed as Legends , Cogger only played a season at Leigh , was a good player , a Legend ?No Way .

| Ah...a bit of hyperbole isn't unusual. Great to have an interview with the bloke for sure and perfectly natural to bring up FFMM with a fellow player from Down Under and get his take on it. It is odd though that there seems to be a need to wheel out an ex-player, legend or not, to publicly endorse a signing (did he realise it would be the feature of a press release?). Surely, it cannot betray any feeling of insecurity on the part of the BOM that they need to defend their investment? I've only noted one Leigh fan "the Watcher" who seems to think this was not a really great signing. Non-Leigh fans will not give two hoots about what Mr Cogger says so I am not really sure what it's trying to achieve. But from a heritage point of view, great to hear from a player who is fondly remembered, albeit one a bit before my time.
