I have got a speeding ticket through the post today for doing 69mph on the Lancs near Leigh.
I thought a dual carriageway was 70mph limit - is the Lancs different?

60 on A roads unless stated otherwise.

Iam pretty sure there are 60 signs most of the way on the Lancs

National Speed Limit signs not 60, then when you get towards Manchester (well Salford ) it reduces to 50.

There are 60 signs when heading towards liverpool but im sure they are pretty new

Isn't the National Speed Limit being reduced to 50 on A roads unless stated? If as you say they're new it's probably the Highways Agency getting ready for the change.

a maximum of 60 mph on East Lancs Road, 50mph when you get past Worsley, then 40 mph when it becomes the A6 at Irlam O Height's.

The national speed limit for a dual carriageway is 70mph. That's why you have the 60mph signs on the Lancs because it's not national speed limit - most of it is 60mph. There's a stretch near Haydock island that's still 70, and that stretch in Salford that's 50 instead.

Did you know that the East Lancashire Road was originally meant to be a road from Liverpool to erm, well, East Lancashire? Hence its name.

It was shelved once it got to Macnhester in favour of the M62 which took 40 years from idea to construction.

I don't understand the point of a standard speed limit if it constantly overridden - if the A580 at 10.30 on a sunny Wed morning is not able to cope with 70mph I wonder where is!

Anyway I spent 3 years on 9 points in 2002-04 so to only have 3 points will be a luxury
