Big Wolfpack Win Over Rusty Centurions
In the most eagerly anticipated Betfred Championship opening fixture for many years, last seasons relegated Leigh Centurions played hosts to newly promoted Toronto Wolfpack at the Leigh Sports Village. Two divisions separated these sides last year, but they were now competing for top spot and the strong place to challenge for a position in Super League 2019.
This was the first ever meeting between these two sides but with many players having had Super League experience there were few strangers taking the field. Nothing would be decided today but with both sides tipped to win far more than they lose over the season, the result could go a long way to deciding who would end the first part of the season at the top of the pile.

And I thought Mason was pretty impressive to be honest'"
Yes the ref. caned us, but if players won't roll away at the ptb, what's he supposed to do? Especially as they had a player in Beswick, to exploit our indiscipline there. Why don't we possess someone with Beswick's nous to do likewise?
I too thought Mason was impressive - he was certainly targeted by Toronto, when he came on. I don't necessarily feel that prop was our problem.

| Absolutely gutted with the result, but with 19 new players in a squad of 27 its going to take time to gel. Toronto was always going to be a very difficult test first game up. After the first 10 mins they seemed to have all the ideas and bags of pace - 34 unanswered points! When was the last time that happened in a championship game at the LSV? We need to get our act together quick because Featherstone, London, Toulouse & Halifax could all cause us serious problems. Lose more than about 7 games and we probably won't make the top 4.
I think the squad is good enough, but at the moment we lack an on field leader, our kicking game & discipline are poor and we don't have much pace.
Not sure about Reynolds as he shows no nous, after a year in SL he should be improving!
Of the new signings so far I like Hutchinson, VaiVai and Mata'utia but not sure about B Thompson and K Lovett.
Lets hope this bad result give them a massive wake up call and we give a decent display against Batley on Sunday.

| Why did we release so many players from last season's squad ?? Widnes finished below us in the table, yet only released 2 players from their squad. Yes we were relegated (in a one off game) but still find it incredible, that a team that put 50 past Wigan, beat Saints & Warrington, Huddersfield 30-0, & Salford 25-0 was 'culled' like it was ! Well done Cunningham.....any chance you fancy coaching again (i,e, Feck off, and spoil some other club

I assume that's right - some we wanted to keep decided to leave based on their contract offer and some we didn't offer a contract.
Obviously the policy was bring in a younger squad.
I think the championship looks harder this year than in the past few - so the team & coaches need to pull this together quickly - building a new team from scratch is not going to be easy.
