There are folk on this board that can flesh out that page with better stats, more biog etc and thereby provide a fans' eulogy. As stated, this guy ain't the man but there is a man or woman on here that can catch the ball and run with it.

Sure that the old man and the older man, were they still here, would add their RIPs and condolences.

Simply an all time great and Leighs best ever forward. Mr perpetual motion was a great open field runner and a "strike" player. Also a devastating tackler. He was unlucky to have as contemporaries two great loose forwards in Vince Karalius and Johnny Whiteley coz selectors kept picking one of them in second row.

"Mickey" when the name Mickey is mentioned we instinctively think of the Colourful Disney character of the same name however, to Leigh fans of a certain age there is only one Mickey, Mickey Martyn!! I feel privileged to have seen him play particularly, for Leigh RLFC. I've read all the splendid memories and recollections that various people have written since Mick passed away and one word keeps appearing, Legend!! Mick was this and a whole lot more to Leigh supporters of the 1950s/60s, its difficult to describe just what a player he was. Wearing his distinctive 'skullcap' and galloping running style Mick was instantly recognisable on the pitch and I could spend all day on here recalling the marvellous try's he scored for the club. I can recall to going to away matches and opposition fans asking me if Mick was playing, the despondency on their faces when I replied he was, told you everything!!
Unfortunately for Mick, he was plagued by shoulder injuries and missed a lot of games not only for Leigh but representative too! had the 'Shoulder Pinning' surgery, that is so successful today, been available to Mick who knows what he might achieved? Mick of course was a member our famous pack, Robinson,Tabern,Owen,Hurt,Martyn along with various loose forwards they seemed to be together for years, which of course they were!!
Mick could have signed for any of the 'big clubs' and there were numerous times that offers were made for his services however, Mick only ever wanted to play for Leigh.
Mick would be in any side I could pick, regardless of nationality!! the night we beat the mighty Australians at Hilton Park, in 1959, when Mick 'played a blinder' are the occasions I will remember him by in the Cherry & White shirt he was so proud to wear
It saddens me to recall these wonderful memories of Mick and its unlikely I'm ever going to see anyone like Mick play for Leigh again. I have never considered attending a Funeral Service for a Sports personality however, it is my intention to discreetly attend Mick's service to pay my own personal respects.
Sincere condolences to Micks family and, R.I.P. Mick you will never be forgotten in Leigh.

Walking into Lilford Park a 10 year old my hero is walking toward me.
Seems to be doing something with a piece of litter. “Are you Micky Martyn?”. “ Yes, son - that’s me”. “What are you doing here Mr Martyn?
“I’m the park keeper”.
“The Park Keeper? - but you’re Micky Martyn!”
He knew what I was thinking that he lived in a big house with a chauffeur as befits a rugby international - but patiently explained the amount of pay they got if they lost.

“And we lose lot, don’t we ?”
“Not cos of you Mickey”

“Thanks, son” and he winked at me and off he strode.

Favourite Leigh player for many of us - played the game as it should be played.
