Have you ever been on an unmoderated, unmanaged message board?
They fill with spam and after a short while reasonable people leave the shambles, and you're left with the extremists who are glad that no-one is silencing them. Of course, no-one is listening either.
Then let's consider that the maintainer of such a site is legally responsible for anything posted on there and left untouched.
There are many very good reasons why these forums are moderated, and most of them have nothing to do with ego.
