Quote advocatus diaboli="advocatus diaboli"So Alan, are you saying that finishing in the top 2 next season is more important than getting in new spectators? This seems to contradict all previous statements from the BOM that have clearly stated we have to get the crowds up. We have to aim next season to finish in the top 2, but also play entertaining rugby. IMHO.'"
No, I'm not saying that. None of this will work without attracting (many) more spectators. I'm definitely all for playing more attractive rugby, but we do have to win matches, or we will be stuck where we are. It's my belief that there is more to the huge reduction in crowds than the style of rugby being played. Only Featherstone, in our league, have not suffered a massive reduction in gates this year - ironically, their supporters told me that they had been playing "boring, one man rugby" (their words) under Powell and Sheridan, until Sean Long arrived and brightened things up - so, are all the Championship teams playing boring rugby?
Take Sheffield, for instance - a highly attractive, exciting team to watch, and look at their support.
All I'm trying to say is that there is more to add to the mix, than attractive rugby, to get the supporters in. Let's see what the BOD/BOM come up with, in the coming weeks and get behind them. They have a plan and are putting their money (and time and expertise) where their mouths are. I believe they deserve the support of anyone who wants to see this club and town rise out of the doldrums.
Oh, and let's credit them with a bit more sense than adopting a 'boom or bust' mentality!
