Grass requires light to manufacture food by the process of photosynthesis. Maybe the floodlights were kept on to increase the rate of photosynthesis so that more food could be made by the grass to make it grow quicker. This would help the pitch to recover from the wear and tear received on a match day.

I really would have liked to believe your explanation Frank, but you couldn't/weren't willing to give it credibilty by admitting you were there. Therefore, I have had to go with the explanation that baffled me with science - I'm afraid your use of big words, like 'ungulate' came just to late to sway the decision in your favour! (anyway, wouldn't the hooves damage the pitch?  )
