| Leigh Miners 44 v 14 Egremont Rangers
Leigh Miners picked up back to back wins for the first time this short season with a 44-14 victory against Egremont Rangers yesterday afternoon at Twist Lane. In what was a fairly open first half it was Egremont who started the brighter scoring first to give them an early 6-0 lead. Miners responded with two back to back tries, the first from winger Bud Skinkis who got on the end of Scott O’Brien’s cross field kick to score, that was followed by a try centre Leon Brennan who barged his way over in the corner, Tom Bradbury landing one conversion to give the score 10-6. The lead didn’t last long as Egremont responded with their second try to edge into the lead again at 12-10. A penalty goal put the score to 14-10 and with the visitors looking the more livelier as the half drew to a close a loose pass attacking the Miners line found Bud Skinkis who raced away a good 80 metres to score, Bradbury converting to give Miners a two point lead at the break with the score at 16-14.
The second half was all one way traffic as far as the scoring went, with Miners running in five unanswered tries to run out comfortable winners. Scott O’Brien opened the scoring after some good work by Gary Gittins, Bradbury converting to open up an eight point gap at 22-14. Adam Thomason was next to score in the left corner and that was followed by Scott O’Brien second try and a Ryan Smith try to put Miners well out of reach of their visitors. The final try of the match was scored by MOM Ryan Smith who broke through the tiring Egremont defence from inside his own half to race away to grab his second of the game, Bradbury converting four from five in the second period to give Miners a 44-14 victory and move them off the foot of the table in Group A.
Next week Miners are away to Wigan St Judes.
