| outside of leigh there would be very few people who would nominate des drummond in any sort of 'best of' compilation. he was ok but nothing special. it probably says more about the leigh club that the likes of des and john woods are held in such high esteem whereas at other more successful clubs they would be seen as no more than half decent. i've been watching the game for 30+ years (and i know there are people who've been watching the game a lot longer) but even in my time of watching the game dessie was not a 'stand out' player. offiah on the other hand is far and away the most special winger of his generation. with regards to comparing players of different eras, it's impossible as the game is constantly evolving and suits different size/style of players at different times

As a Leyther, you’re one of us the moment you come here to wear the shirt. I don't care where you were born, what colour you are, what religion you are, what language you speak. You're one of us, part of our culture, writing our history as you create your own, and making us stronger for it....[/quote:suio7kr3]:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_10303.jpg |

And a certain Alexander James Murphy states that "God" was the best player he ever coached.....which puts an end to the Edwards comparison!!!

He certainly does. I remember asking him about Woody and Edwards and he said that Woody was without doubt the best player he ever had playing for him and he couldn't be matched for his natural talent. The only way that Edwards had the edge over Woody was his determination, but for natural skill and ability, it was Woody every time.

| Edwards also had the edge in application and consistency; despite his achievements Woody was a talent wasted.

Edwards had no edge over Woody, absolutely not! Good player player though Edwards was, he just was not John Woods class! as for applying himself well, he did a pretty good job in the ten years I watched him play for Leigh!

Edwards captained england schools rugby league and union at 14......Murphy wouldnt have coached Edwards in his prime as he was 16/17 when Murphy coached him.
he never got to coach Hanley, Edwads, Kenny so the argument of he was more skillful because Murphy said so doesnt add up.
Dont get me wrong woody was a good player but he wasnt as good as Edwards, if he applied himself more he could have been but let himself down I feel.
