| Quote: easyWire "I think it should have been made 8 games into the season when it was clear we couldn't turn things around.
That way a new coach would have had the rest of the season to secure at least the Top 8 and a good cup run (a la Smith 2009) and then use the off-season to work from a clean slate and have a good first full year in charge.
Look at where we are now - no signings and struggling to get a coach all because of the uncertainty of whether we'd be playing in the top flight.'"
The Leeds - Salford double weekend should have been the absolute final straw. In the raw emotion of the moment I'd have probably done it sooner still, to be honest. But Wakefield pretty much confirmed the inevitable.
Cockle-warming that we wanted to let him down gently, but the result is that we are likely to have another "transitional year" to go with 2014 and 2015.

| Brought more success to this club than anyone before him. Took us from slightly above average to completely mixing it and sometimes dominating the big few.
Couldn't quite take us to GF glory but 3 appearances, 4 challenge cup appearances, winning 3, and 2 league leaders shields isn't a bad haul from what we had ever had in the same amount of time. Takes us to within 80 minutes of all 3 pieces of silverware one year and then out the door the next.
Shame it had to end this way. Only had 1 bad season in his tenure but it was free fall. Thanks for everything Tony! Good Luck.

| I still think a timely announcement or two from the club hierarchy could have saved a lot of fan unrest this year & I would like to think that if there are any evident problems in the dressing room or the back room then they will be dealt with before 2018 & any wrong doers flushed out.

Blowing a 14 point lead, conceding 30 unanswered points in 2013 merely underlines this. We bottled it, that night. We switched off, the moment Monaghan went off injured. By the time Ratchford went off, we were already "rabbits in the headlights".
Professional, hard nosed teams don't do that.
That's why Leeds, Wigan, Saints and Bradford have a stranglehold on the GF.
The new coach needs to be RUTHLESS. Not a glorified social worker'"
Smith's biggest mistake that night, though, was selecting Ratchford over Hodgson. His cool, experienced head, not to mention his skills in opening up the opposition defense, were badly missed that night.

I don't know about dominating the big few. We had some individual results over the years but they could all say the same.
The trophy haul and finals we have been to have been more than we've ever had, so we've got to be grateful for that but we're still only the 3rd most successful club during Smith's time here. With the squad and money at our disposal, I'd argue that it should have been better.
There's been more than 1 bad season and getting to the Challenge Cup final and Grand Final last year really did mask the issues. I know Sandow tailed off through the season but without him (and Gidley to some extent) we shouldn't have been within a couple of play of winning the lot.
We may never see another team as exciting as the 2011/12 team but we've faded badly since then due to poor recruitment and some strange man management.

Mmmm personally I'd give that accolade to Cecil Mountford.

Here we go again. You selectively cut and paste my reply and then insult me with the crazy icon (which as someone who suffers from a mental health condition is not nice).
So, I will withdraw from discussing this point with you but if I ever see you in person I'll make a point of raising it again with you.

I'm sure if this forum had been around at the time plenty on here would still have been calling for his head after the 1956 play-off debacle, and then the decline to 10th and 13th in the following 2 seasons. Anyway, he inherited that treble winning team, and blah, blah, blah...
In 60 years time, Smith will no doubt get the accolades he deserves too, without someone wanting to take the discussion onto whether he treated Micky Higham badly, or made a mistake signing an Aussie prop who then got injured.
FWIW I'd say Chris Brockbank was our most successful coach, despite not racking up as many trophies Mountford or Smith.

No personal insult intended with the icon; apologies if it came across that way.

That may be so. My post was in direct reply to the comment "Brought more success to this club than anyone before him" and nothing more.

It is true that Cec Mountford won more trophies than any other Warrington coach but that doesn't make him our most successful coach. The main difference between him and Tony Smith is that Mountford inherited (from Chris Brockbank) a team which was already highly successful and won all of the trophies listed here with essentially the same team that he inherited. Tony Smith inherited a mediocre mid-table team and briefly made them into world-beaters. When Mountford left, the team was ruined and didn't win anything else for years.
Personally I think Chris Brockbank was our most-successful coach but I am probably biased because he was the coach when I first started supporting them

| Anyways, Smith was good for us we all appreciate what he's done but it's hard to argue against the fact his time here was at an end.
Let's stop all the bickering and look forward to hopefully a fresh start with a new coach and a better 2018 building towards challenging again in 2019 with a new squad.
