| Quote: ShropshireWire "A wins a wins but flipping heck that was a tiring watch. Mikaele looks like the heft we need despite looking knackered at times.
Why do we keep kicking to opposition players? RL newbie question - but surely if we just kick it where they aren’t standing then we could make up a few more metres.
Felt tense too didn’t it.'"
Its a bit like fielding in cricket, fullback covers x amount of pitch, the other winger covers the other. Kickers are under pressure to get the ball away and it's unlikely you'll get any distance if you keep it low, or it'll get charged down.
In most cases where it does hit the floor it's either a kick, or it's a good kick that the catcher is too lazy to get in position for.

| Quote: Fantastic Mr Catpiss "As awful as it was, I dont care.
Right now we just needed a win, we defended alright against hull's famed huge pack, and as keeps getting mentioned, heads didn't go down after any bad decisions or mistakes (of which there were a lot) including the thewlis no Try.
We played it basic, we got a win. Stopped the slump. Let's see if we can back it up next week now.'"
Also, forgot to mention, despite it being bloody awful, it wasn't so bad that the crowd got on the players back like in recent weeks, and slowly in the 2nd half we started getting behind them and singing more.

| Mistake filled game played by two poor teams. Gale's injury was crucial as they had no halves. Only highlights our defence in last five minutes and glimpses of what Mikaele might offer. Powell's team selection continues to confuse.

Disagree with this, they both put a decent effort in.
Yes still need more but they played their part

| Yeah, I thought both were better last night. Currie especially seemed keen.

| Quote: Barbed Wire "It’s a bit of a forgotten art. On the last, the wingers drop back to cover more surface area, but there is just no desire to kick earlier any more.
There has been a shift of mentality to make the other team defend every play and then put the ball in the air and the hang time will allow the chasers to limit the meters.
Personally, I yearn for bygone times. Kick earlier and turn them around, or if you do put it in the air then challenge for it. But it’s a game of percentages these days.'"
I think if the kick is the same all the time regardless of what type of kick it is the defence will find it easier to deal with and the kicking game will look ineffective. Variation in kicking game is the key as it makes it harder for a back 3 to get their positions right.
High kicks are only a problem when they're exact replicas of every other kick so far in a match I think we are massively 1 dimensional in our kicking game and have been for some time. In the NRL that's often the case as well BUT the kick and chase are a lot more coordinated and the execution from the while team is much better, so it's about territory and the opportunity to force an error, although qyit boring it is effective in the NRL. The kicks and the chase we have been putting in will never force an error unless playing against amateur opposition, I actually think the opposition having so much time to deal with the kicks and the poor chase has more potential to cause us problems than the opposition.
How Powell hasn't identified Williams lack of kicking game is beyond me. I suppose it's not like we have lots of options in the squad, especially whilst Dean is at gateshead.

| I certainly hope Mikaele has more gas in his tank than was on show last night . Despite some good runs he was running out of steam too easily ,hopefully just lack of match fitness. Harrison was trying & Philbin was lively till his injury. Cooper ,his usual100% contribution.
Thankfully ,the game came alive after our second goal when Hull realised they could still win.& our defence stood up well against their big players.

I thought that too - both were more aggressive last night and seemed to work a lot harder. Holmes did a lot of sideways running was wasn't great but did a lot of defensive work.
Also noted that Daryl Clark made 59 tackles last night - no lack of effort there!

| Horrible game to watch, but Wire found a way to win, rather than finding a way to lose.

I agree and put that down to Child's and the player's reaction to some woeful refereeing, a bit of effort and injustice

| On the plus side:
Mikaele made the yards we need at prop (hope he can improve on this benchmark)
Wrench & Thewlis played very well
We won and didn't concede 30-40+ points
Negative side:
We need to find many more sparks of creativity
Ratchford, where do you play him (an old chestnut, but I still don't think he's worth a starting slot any more), as he looked lost at centre last night?
Matu'atia, why was he at half back? Yes, we have now won two games with him playing there, but we have Thewlis who's a full back, Widdop who's a half back and Ratchford in the starting 13. He's not the creative attacking half back that we need, even if he had a solid game in that position.

I'm an advocate of the captains challenge in SL, and the opportunity of incidents being looked at by the video ref.

Kind of agree but at same time it just slows the game down further. But how that was not a penalty for tackle off the ball against Williams I’m confused.

I wonder if there is too much of an ego/personality clash with our 2 superstars at half back & they are both trying to dictate play.
PS was anybody else grateful it didn't go into first point extra time ?

Auntie Rico.
She's a rare visitor and this was her first game this season (what a belter) her last match was Williams' debut away at Leeds and that drop she certainly likes her nerves jangling
