1883.jpg Didn't William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run, someone should really tell Rugby Union.

| Quote: Rob Wire "If your on about either Burrow or McGuire then both were experienced SL players before they won silverware with the Rhinos, its a far cry from a young kid that hasn`t even played a game of SL yet.
I`m not saying we shouldn`t invest in young british talent as i think we should do without any shadow of a doubt, its just i wouldn`t want us to go down the route you seem to want us to go down and that is to sign a rookie kid that hasn`t played a single game of SL yet with all his form is in a lower league that made Mick Nanyn look like Mal Menninga and start him as a first choice half back.
All Richie Myler is so far is a bit of potential and nothing more, Tompkins is twice the player he is anyway if your talking about talented british half backs.'"
Tomkins has done nothing, so how can you say he is twice the player?

What are you basing this upon Rob? How many times have you seen Tomkins play?
Lots of hype about Tomkins and he may well prove to be a great player but Myler is over a year younger and has already played a full season in senior rugby winning many awards in the process. Which of the two has scored a hat-trick against the Aussies at representative level?

I`m basing it on him scoring 5 tries on his full team debut against Whitehaven, scoring a hatrick of tries against us along with the various glowing articles ive read about him from some of the top names connected with the game.
I saw plenty of Richie Myler last year, from what ive seen of him on sky he seems like a support player that will finish off moves and doesn`t come across as a creator to me, Tompkins seems to have all the tricks needed to become the far better player out of the 2, he just needs to work on his body strength and to fill out a bit more. I don`t rate Richie Myler in the way some are building him up, i didn`t see anything out of the ordinary last year that would concern me as a Warrington fan.
Richie Myler is great at being on the end of a lot of run-ins, i`ll give him that much that he is a good support player.

| Sullivan, Bridge etc Might not have achieved what we expected from them who were seen to be stars of the future and present but was not to be.
So it's no excuse we and other clubs look to the more wiser and experienced play makers.
However rightly or wrongly depending on your views we picked up a young Saints half who was fresh to the game. The rest is history.

But, I take it that you weren't at the Wigan v Whitehaven game, so, were you at the Xmas friendly ? Or have you literally, literally never seen him play, your literally forming your opinion through what you've read & heard.
Look, You & I disagree over Myler obviously. You think he's ordinary, a finisher, not a creater. I think he's much better than that, as I've said, when I watched him his short kicking game was immense, setting up countless tries, and he has got good hands, I always thought he looked a threat will ball in hand. Yes, he's a finisher, I agree, see his England performance for that (which you pooh poohd as they let anyone play, but i've not seen too many 19 year old half backs from the National League called up and play before, and look so comfortable in the game as he did), but 40 tries in your debut season is some going, even if it is at a slightly lesser standard.
Time will tell I suppose, we'll have to leave it there or we'll go around in circles. Oh, last one, it's Tomkins not Tompkins, just so that you know when you see him like.

Its no different to Scott Moore and Matty Smith at Saints who were supposed to be the next big thing, Scott Leatherbarrow was signed as the next big thing in the half backs at Warrington and i have no doubt that Bobby Goulding Jnr will get a similar tag at some point.
Its not just at Wigan where players can be over hyped at times, Tommy Lee at Hull is another that got well hyped up and so far has done very little. Its just natural for young players to get hyped up and a lot of the time its OTT.

Anyhow Rob, Who are these signings that we should be targetting from Union instead of wasting time signing Myler who MAY or may NOT be good enough ?

Union isn`t really a game i follow apart from watching the odd England international so the likes of Sally will knbow more about the current players that could make it in league from that code, we have too many clubs from both the northern and southern hemispheres in RL fightling for a limited amount of quality players so looking towards Union was just an idea as we havn`t done too bad in the past with Union players down the years at Warrington.

I agree.
Anyway, back to Tomkins - what are you basing your view on Rob? I must say, I was impressed in the friendly but that is the only thing to base my opinion on.
<thread drift>
Does anyone know when the reserves fixtures are out?
