That’s a new low! Union is a better product at the moment but ball skills still clearly superior in League. Even Warrington, unless Patton is involved.

Quote: lefty goldblatt "To be fair, we've not had pace for years.
Penny (hated by many) and Riley (to some extent, had some) were our only pacy wingers of recent times. After that, you've to go back to Henare in the mid 90's, and then you've to go back to Forster (pre knee injury) and Dessie, for any wingers pace.
Our centres, on the whole are like carthorses.
... and bar (pre injury) Currie, you've to go back to my mancrush of Mark Roberts, and Mike Gregory, for any pace from the forwards.'"

I can think of three brief windows when we had a player of genuine, express, pace:

1. Richard Henare in his first season (1996), he was not in the same shape in his second.

2. Graham Appo, from late 2002 through his Dream Team season 2003, before injuries and poor conditioning robbed him of a lot of pace.

3. Kevin Penny, from 2007 to around 2009 before injuries took the edge off his pace too.

Also I think there are different types of impressive pace. Des Drummond and Jonathan Davies were maybe slightly off the pace of the guys above, over the full length of the field, but they could get to max speed within a few steps which meant they could burn people off through a gap. Late 90s Toa Kohe-Love also gets a shout, again not quite as quick as those three, but his balance and ability to step and swerve at full speed made him unstoppable for a few seasons even in a mediocre side.

I never thought Riley was in the top grade for speed. Quick yes but not out of the ordinary. I'd put Allan Hunte ahead of Riley.

Some of our most prolific try scoring wingers were nothing more than average pace - Joel Monaghan and Fa'afili come to mind.

We could have Martin Offiah in his prime on the wing and we'd still be asking him to catch high kicks to the corner and take it up from the ptb.

Unless we engineer and persist with a more expansive gameplan, until we play with centres capable of putting their winger one on one or in space and until we get a lunatic of a prop who eats house bricks for lunch and can give our attack some space .......... we'll continue to struggle.

We'll sign a trundling second row who does the basics right. I think it says a lot about Price that his favourite player is Hughes - nothing against Hughes just think it highlights what our coach favours and can't see it changing.

No point in having Ferrari's if you never get them out of the garage

The wingers never have any space to work with & hardly ever seems to be any broken play in a Warrington game

Hope you've all spotted Jack Johnson scoring tries from distance for Featherstone in the play-offs. Should still be here!

Quote: Maco7 "Can't argue with any of this. Matty Ashton who we have signed is absolutely rapid, whether he gets in ahead of Lineham i'm not so sure but he looks a real talent albeit from highlight clips I've seen. Is Keanan Brand quick? I wouldn't know.

Our halves are no slouches either, Austin once through a gap is quick and Widdop isn't slow.'"

Ashton will get a game in front of Lineham every now and then, Lineham spent half the season injured or banned.

It stands out a mile, and that’s why the opposition will take risks in our 20 to score, because they know if it breaks down we havnt got the pace to hurt them icon_biggrin.gif

I think we are alright for pace, charnley, Clark, mamo are all quick. Currie used to be very fast too. We have pace to hurt teams but 5 drives and a kick doesn't tend to cause many problems, especially when it's the only thing you ask of an opposition defence. I would say we have been the easiest team in the league to prepare to play against this season. With our resources and players that's absolutely shocking.

pace?

a few years ago (might be a bit more than a few), Rhys Williams measured the 5th fastest 100m in SL and the fastest at the club.

We certainly have alot more pace in the team now, than we did a few years ago.

pace isnt the problem..... its the forwards and the way we play.

Exactly wingers not scoring has nothing to do with their pace but kore to do with our second row and centre partnership not really doing much to create space a d doubt in the defence to get them through. Most of their trys come from a kick or the cut out pass missing out the centre second row.

I don't think the centres have seen enough ball to be blamed either though.

That's what I'm eluding to there's no real attacking threat from second row to wing its all very one dimensional. And reliant to the half's or ratch to make the pass.

I'd like to see faster hands with the second rower making the pass to the winger with the centre making a dummy run or some kind of combination variation of that it's not revolutionary or somthing new. If we have currie and Hughes then it's somthing I would expect us to be doing were sacraficing size for what gain?

Unless something radical is done about this year's debacle (CC excepted) , the most glaring deficiency will be poor season ticket sales for next year. How a so called top club & players can just expect wage paying supporters just to "suck it up" & put up with lack of effort & commitment is beyond me. I too can turn up for the same chosen games as the team.
