| Lyon came to our school to watch over a PE lesson once. Our PE teacher was former Wigan and Salford player Jeff Clare. The scousers went off with the footballs but the rugby lads stayed next to Lyon asking him all sorts. He told us that afternoon that he'd signed for Saints... we went off to join the scouse lads.
Mr Claire's claim to fame was that he scored the first four point try. I remember that cos he told us every bloody lesson.

| Cost us the Maine Road semi though by missing touch with one of his long range efforts. I'm pretty sure Edwards scored the winner in the next set.

1989? Joe Lydon's monster drop goal?

Lydons drop goal put you 7-6 up. it visibly knocked the stuffing out of us because we had been on top...... but a one point margin was still retreivable for Wires.
Dave Lyon missing touch giving Wigan Possesion which saw Hanley break free to Put Edwards away Was the winning try and Something we were never coming back from.
thats How I rememeber the game going anyway.

I remember it being tense till Edwards went over, but that drop goal is my lasting memory as he kicked it right in front of me. Went to every round that year including Wembley on crutches.

And steep. Saw a bloke fall down a good few steps during the Wigan v Bath game. Painful.

| I thought Lyon was a great player. Very solid with a good turn of pace. Wonder what he's doing now.
Actually I think we've been blessed with some fine full backs over the years from Whitehead (when I first started watching Wire), Hesford, Johnson, Lyon, Penny (and I make no excuse for including him - very strong and solid), Hodgson - just to name a few

| Two memories of Lyon, complete opposites
Firstly, against Widnes at Wilderspool, he was stood just to the right of the sticks at the Fletcher End, when Kurt Sorenson broke through, only Lyon to beat, and as he was close to the line, Kurt decided to go straight through him - Lyon launched into him driving his shoulder right into his midriff and driving off Kurt his feet and onto his back - Sorenson's expression was priceless.
Secondly, he scored a long(ish) range try (can't remember who against), walked back to the Fletcher End and threw up near the line.

One of my lasting memories of that game was when Tony Thorniley looked certain to score but somehow he failed to go over, that was the difference back in those days because if that same chance had been given to Lydon or Bell they would have flew in.
In my opinion that was a bigger turning point than the Lydon drop goal, John Woods and Les Boyd were outstanding that day, pitty we didn't have Phil Blake, from memory i don't think Souths would release him or Les Davidson for the game, could be wrong tho. I think it was deffo one of them that we couldn't get over or may have been both.
Dave Lyon was solid and reliable, a very good pro.

50086_1357229109.jpg [b:33tg3xj5]Me:[/b:33tg3xj5] I'm still reeling from the news that someone is considering watching the 1st and 3rd game on Saturday and NOT watching Warrington play. It's like being in Shea Stadium when the Beatles came to town and deciding to nip out for a fag.
[b:33tg3xj5]knockersbumpMKII:[/b:33tg3xj5] Is it FOOK, you're good but you're not THAT good, jesus you wanky fans need to get over yourselves, Beatles at the Shea in '65 was a once in a lifetime opportunity for some (despite the following years performance), you can watch a very good team in primrose & yellow play every week if you really wanted to but comparing it to one of the very best music groups of all time in an iconic stadia such as the shea is overegging your importance, you're not even the best team in SL atm:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_50086.jpg |
|
| Has anyone seen the League of Their Own DVDs about the GB Lions? Comes across as a thick Wiganer who spits a lot in that - appreciate that's not exactly narrowing it down, but still.

Don't apologise for Penny, fez1
Bloody good FB was Penny, and bagged himself plenty of tries. Some crucial ones too...v Wigan epic 01 game, and THAT comeback v Bradford roundabout the same time.
Again, Penny was similar to Lyon...in the top 3 FB's in the league in his time, but wasn't good enough to play internationaly, and there was always somebody better there, at the time.
