So what are our thoughts about Austin coming over in 2019?
He seems to be the great hope, but so was Roberts this time last year: the marquee signing who was going to lift us to another level. So maybe we need to be realistic and reserve judgement rather than building him up too much?
I had a look at a Canberra Raiders forum, they are are few of his "season review" threads archived which make for interesting reading:
2015: https://www.thegh.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30136
2016: https://www.thegh.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31426
2017: https://thegh.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32272
2018: https://thegh.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=33029
Doesn't sound like the greatest endorsement. One thing that worries me is there seemed to be a pattern that repeated at all three of his NRL clubs - he was sensational when he arrived, then gradually tailed off. He also sounds a bit Barba-esque in defence.
Certainly should be an exciting player, for good and bad, but whether he is someone who will take us to another level remains to be seen.

He will deserve it if he contributes to a winning performance.
Clearly he has never done this in the past and thus has never deserved to be in a final, i suspect that the same scenario will occur tomorrow.:30555.jpg |

Still needs a decent half to play with....Brown and Patton are not the answer!

| I'm expecting him to be a lazy, overweight shirker who spends all season at acting half back or putting aimless kicks in and spends his days off complainig the weather is too cold/hot/snowy/windy/european and the surfing is rubbish.
At least this way I might avoid the disappointment of expecting Allan Langer and getting Alan Carr.

| Unfortunately we forget that even tho they're on marquee wages here, it's nothing special compared to potential nrl salary were paying a premium just to get em over here that's where the money is going not on ability.
We then hope that they're as good or better than their peers in super league. It's a gamble.
One question, Blake Austin on a long term or someone like Smith cronk slater on a one year?

Like Sally - I've been doing some research on Austin and I'm not filled with hope. This is in a similar vein to the 2018 reviews he posted:
https://sportress.wordpress.com/2018/07 ... ssion=true
He basically is a good runner but a one trick pony when you read the sidestep. Doesn't have a creative passing or kicking game and is a poor defensive reader, who is best used as an impact player against tiring defence.
I watched the Canberra - Warriors game (final one of the season) and he was anonymous apart from kicking out on the full and missing touch with a penalty so he should fit in well with us. The stand out player in that game was a certain Mr. Hiku. He is absolute class and I'd break the bank for him.
I'll not be getting my hopes up too high just yet on Blake though. I've been disappointed too many times now.
But I hope to be proven wrong.

| Sometimes average NRL Players make superb SL players though. Not suggesting Austin will, but he’s got to be better than what was available here. I’ll be interested to see who we’ve got planned to line up alongside him though. Surely it can’t be just Brown?

| So with Roberts it was a case of people believing he had the talent but couldn't be bothered, but with Austin he doesn't even have the talent?
Welcome to Warrington Blake! sheesh

| Well, if he has a sidestep, even an easily readable one, he should still make more line breaks than his predecessor did. One would do it.

| As I've said before, I'm done with watching YouTube clips. Too many high hopes, dashed.
I've not clicked on Sally's links. I imagine they're disgruntled fans venting their spleens. The SL is a lot easier than NRL, so he's got a fair bit more scope to play well.
No. The bit that interests me, is Sally's "started off sensationally, then tailed off" bit. He's just described Graham Appo. Apparently, he made a career out of this.
I pray Austin doesn't follow the same path.
Here's hoping.

| I'm giving the lad the same blank sheet as I do everyone.
If a month in I feel the honeymoon period is over and he isn't pulling his weight, he'll get his own topic too.

At least if Austin did that, we'd be back to where we were with Sandow (or Saints with Barba) and I'd quite look forward to an early season of Austin tearing teams up.
The main thing I want to avoid with a big signing like this, is going through the familiar soul-destroying cycle again:
- "can't wait to see him in the flesh, he could be the man who wins us the Grand Final this year"
- "lets not knee-jerk after 2 games, he's only just got here and he's probably not fully fit"
- "maybe he will get better when the sun comes out and the pitches firm up"
- "why not give one of the Academy lads a chance, or is he undroppable because of his big salary?"
- "I will drive him to the airport myself"

I expect this will be cut and pasted as the season goes on will save certain posters a lot of typing.
