| I thought wire was invented by two scotsmen fighting over a penny.
Interesting......Wolves defense was bloody inspirational

More specifically, back in the days when the sport was part time and the players were working 'hard' jobs locally, wire pulling was a major (the main?) industry in the town, thus, it would be a safe bet that the majority of the players were full time wire pullers playing Rugby in their spare time.
I don't think we'll ever get team nicknames based on local industry ever again. Could you imagine it? every team would end up being called "the phone monkeys", given that call centres is all we seem to have anymore!

| The way your lot are playing the game right now is an absolute joy to watch, as well as being a nice antidote to the spoiling, slowing brand of RL that has emanated out of some clubs in recent seasons. As a neutral, I can confidently say that if every coach aspired to play the way that Tony Smith has got Wire playing, the whole competition would be signifcantly improved as a spectacle.
Enjoy it - I know I would.

| On the subject of team nicknames, where did the term "Loiners" for Leeds ever come from? It brings to mind some rather unpleasant images for me, but maybe 'loin' means something different out that way to what it does on this side of the pennines.

| Thanks for the replies guys....very interesting, love hhistory on rugby league.
Brett Hodgsons junior club, Western Suburbs Magpies (one half of the joint venture that is now Wests Tigers in the NRL ) were originally called the Fruit Pickers, the area they originally formed from was predominately rural, orchards farms etc
The other half of the Joint venture - Balmain Tigers - were called the Watersiders on account of Balmains proximity to Sydney harbour
With a bit of luck if you blokes keep playing the way yous are I will get to watch the entire final series and hopefully a premiership.
Is it a 5 week series?
Or is your next game a grand final qualifier?
I know Wolves get next week off and then get to choose their opponents....sounds a much better situation to the bloody Macintyre system we use here
