| Jonathan Davies did magical things with us, and is the closest I've ever seen us come to winning the league.

| Sorry to fence sit but I can't, even after 30+ years of watching them. The following would be on a short list though
Boyd, for everything TFB mentioned
Johnny D, my favourite time for being a Wire fan. Going to away games and thinking, WOW, this guy plays for US, what a privillage
Mike Greg, what wasn't to like about the fella. Good ball handler, and clever brain. Never a backward step and liked a bit of biff, too. Also, one of my early sporting heroes.
I can see other people's arguements, too
I'm expecting Matt King's Cat to mention John Bevan (I used to think he was a giant), and Parry Gordon (I only caught the very back end of his career)
I can see a lot of the mid 20's and lower going for Briers, who's loyalty to our club is to be commended.

| Allan Langer. His game was one step ahead of everyone elses, and to get called up for State of Origin while in a Wire shirt is a fantastic achievement, at his age too.
Lee briers would be my other choice. Legend.

| Jonathan Davies. Possibly not the best player ever to grace the Primrose n Blue, but certainly my favourite

| From my era (me being 34) its difficult to see past Davies... he was such a talent.... he could play any position in the backs.. infact it was difficult to know his best position.
I remember my dad and grandad (who were big widnes fans) taking me to watch a few widnes games when he played for them... the one that stands out was against the touring australia side.. think it was the same year dessie butted mal meninga... anyway Davies played at stand off and ran the show... if i remember correctly widnes won the game and Davies scored and amazing try.. he did one of those 5 meter wide side steps straight through the aussie line... he then did the same step straight inside the fullback and went under the posts.
fullback, centre, wing, stand off..... didnt really matter where he played.... he was fast, he had great hands, one the the best side steps ive ever seen, amazing acceleration and a great rugby brain... he also had one of the biggest kicks i have ever seen.... the distance he could kick the ball out of his hands into touch was freakish.... also a deadly goalkicker under pressure.... you would have thought that defence would have been his weak point due to his size... but it wasn't really.
very difficult to find an area of his game that wasn't exceptional.... so Davies for me.... by quite some distance.

| From my time watching the Wire from the 86 season, i'd day Jonathan Davies is the best player i've seen in primrose and blue, i was watching the highlights from the 93-94 season the other day and some of the tries Davies scored (on muddy boggy pitches) were stunning! He must have scored at least 10 that were contender for try of the season. The only other player i've seen in my time who comes close in terms of skill was Phil Blake.

| The greatest player for me was Davies, followed by Langer. The greatest Wire forward? Morley.

| there are great servants to the club who are outstanding class still in the team. Moz is still in the top two props in the league and never tires. Benny Westwood is adaptable and a machine, a real pleasure to watch. Michael Mon can play great in a load of positions and is untouchable at 9.
but for me, and it's a cliché, it is Lee Briers. Like Moz getting better with age but has been the dictionary definition of a servant to the club. A real rugby hero in my eyes and a truly nice bloke. His abilities are vast. I think he is the best in his position in the league. He can create a chemistry with the players he supports and one need only look at a certain match at the end of august 2010 to see his true class. Also that drop goal against Hull Kr was real class.
I was shocked when my really dyed in the wool (to the point of comedy) saints fan friends said they'd have loved to have had him in the team. He is that good.
I do hope when this is asked in another decade people say R Myler
