I'd say that last paragraph smells of faeces.

To what evidence are you basing monas being a better coach than either poching or marshall?

Perhaps I know more than I make out and one again face the being shot down by the same posters again.

While I'm at it..
I'm also wise to a 2 year extension to a backrower to be announced.

Quote: rubber duckie "Here's the plan.

Smith last time he signed a contract extension would not be drawn on the matter by the press and left it late to resign. It's a carbon copy again, Smith will stay at Wire as Director of rugby and coaching.

Agar resigns from a club mid term walking away from £100,000!? Bet your life he's coming to Warrington as a coach.

Monas said very openly he wants to stay at Wire in a coaching capacity...how could we refuse his services after his committal to Warrington. He'll be a coach too.

So in balance we have Marshall and Poaching in their position, man for man Agar and Monas would be seen as an improvement on the coaching side.
So I'm afraid Marshall and Poaching with be looking for another club.

If it smells like custard it's most probably custard.'"

Seriously?

Agar is a journeyman with a series of failures against his name and Monas has never even done any coaching with the U16s or U19s or indeed to my knowledge, anywhere at all.

Head Coach is a very different animal than an Assistant. The Head Coach is often the senior authority figure who keeps a respectful distance between himself and the players so tough decisions can be made. The Assistant generally can then have a closer 'on your side' relationship with the players. However we have seen many times before how hard it can be for an Assistant to make that change. Some people are just inherently more suitable for one role or the other.

There you go then.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons Smith wants Agar.

And hence why you see clubs bring in a Head Coach from elsewhere rather than promote from within. I am trying to think of an Assistant Coach promoted to Head Coach who has ever really succeeded.

But surely there are better options than Agar? Nearly as bad as the time when there was talk of bringing in Millward as Head Of Youth.

in the most cases yes, however you've got the examples of Wane currently at wigan, Mcdermott at leeds (sort of) and bradford bulls 97-2004.

It could be argued that anyone could have coached Leeds to a title during McDermott's tenure there as its been a pretty good team. Likewise with the bradford job, they had a pretty defined structure with the way the first team played, as long as the playing staff was maintained for that, the coach didn't matter a huge amount.

However i do agree with your point on difference between ability as an assistant or a head coach, you see it in football as well, but in RL its apparent, john kear i think is a better number 2, than a head coach. However i wouldn't classify Agar as either, i think Hull were hoping he'd develop into something when they took him from Dewsbury( i think, or FEv) but we've got such a small talent pool for coaches in this country that you see people automatically being selected for jobs they shouldn't have, Darren Abram bounced about a bit, Andy Kelly, Bobbie goulding got the France job for gods sake, and also Tony Benson.

In the lower leagues, people just seem to circulate around, as do the players.

I think you have me there on Wane, that is a good example but it seems as though he coaches like an Assistant Coach, heart on sleeve, me and the players against the world and with emotion. Makes you wonder if he could succeed elsewhere with that method as he woldn't have the connection with the club. Head Coaches are generally a bit more detached and analytical (they have to be and also be able to stand by any decisions they make... hence they are always to blame if it goes wrong; players and backroom staff always escape a lot of criticism)

Being a good player doesn't always mean a straight transition to being a good coach. Look at big fat Garry Schofield for example. Fantastic player but never made it in coaching. Smith was average at best but has become a well established coach.
