Warrington's defence last night was shocking and there were many culprits.

However this threads is about Penny.

He has enthusiasm & nice expensive boots, but for Christs sake the lad can't play rugby. Anyone with eyes can see that. His mistakes both on & off the ball were embarrasing and simply undefendable.

Do the decent thing & either sack him, send him to Widnes of have the common sense to realise he'll never ever make it in the top grade & resign

This thread depresses me. We seem to bicker, fall out, name call and insult just because of differing opinions.

Anyone booing him, or wishing he was injured after that tackle, cannot call themselves fans. That is shocking behaviour regardless.

However it is perfectly possible for fans to hold an opinion that he is (currently) a liability, lacks composure and the skills to hold a place in an SL side without being called names on here by the usual suspects who seem to flaunt the AUP by abusing other forum members.

I don't think anyone would blame him for the loss tonight, or say he was alone in his underperformance either. However it is true to say he has some serious areas to address in his game and skills.

It would be more interesting to debate how/where he has improved his game following his spell at Widnes.

All I can say is come on Kev, I believe the vast majority of wire fans want you to make it and think you can.

Getting stick off away supporters and a percentage of your own "supporters" I'm afraid comes with the job. In fact when I was younger and more of a big mouth, I used to give the likes of Offiah a hard time.

People will make out that it wa typical Penny, when actually it wasn't. He doesn't usually make those kind of mistakes, some of them last night were ridiculous. I think it is pretty clear that he was trying too hard, and hopefully now he has had his return game at the HJ he will calm down.

To counter some of this negativity, can I just point out a couple of the good things he did.

His defence was very solid, much better than previous matches with us.

He also got the ball down three times, almost a fourth. I don't know whether the ref was right with the forward pass or offside, however on another night with a different ref, the lad would have had another hat-trick, yet folk on the terraces would still be booing him.

His take for his second disallowed try was world class. Not bad for a bloke who can't catch.

i just think the people who boo him when he makes a mess of things then cheer and appluad him when he scores are just morons. the lad needs the support of the crowd when he makes the mistake not morons shouting at him

Ts needs to get him to understand its team game and to clam down and chanel all that energy into doing what he does best.

Most of the crap I expected to read on here has appeared, fortunately punctuated with some sensible analysis from the sensible folk.

Penny was quite clearly eager to impress last night, and certainly in the first half hour he was a little too eager, causing him to make a couple of howlers. Sadly, this was accentuated by a vast section of the crowd getting on his back and acting like complete nice people.

For much of that half hour, our established players didn't help him a great deal. Giving the ball to a winger on the last tackle on your own thirty puts a huge amount of pressure on him to produce something special and gain metres that would have more easily been acquired by a simple punt downfield for him to chase after. Briers eventually stepped up to the mark and largely helped him out well in the second half.

Penny won't and shouldn't play at Wembley, he needs time to get his confidence back and I echo JWP's sentiments that if he can go to Widnes and become a star, then that's a better outcome than having to put up with some of the idiots who watch Warrington.

I find this thread utterly depressing.

We have so many people banging on about overpaid Aussies only here for the money and we get a local kid with bags of enthusiasm and lots of people want him out.

Most of the anti Penny quotes I read are from kids or from people who have never played the game. Yes his defence is not his strong point, but he offers a threat that few wingers do.

With a decent centre he would come on leaps and bounds.

What I do know is that he enjoyed his rugby at Widnes, they passed to him! Unbelievable! They kicked for him to chase, and he scored a try a game.

I also know he will be a Warrington player next season.

Wirral Wire makes an interesting point about kicking for KP to chase.
In the first half we had a scrum in our own 20m, and the Wakefield line was up as one, with nobody behind.
The crowd in the East stand were praying for a kick from Briers for Penny to chase, but it never came.
The kick that he did catch was a phenomenal take and score, which I am sure wasn't offside.
In the second half we commented on his defending stint, which has clearly improved.
As I said in my previous comments, we are unlikely to make the top 8, so give him a run for the last 2 league games, with a proper centre, and restore his confidence.
We do not seem to know, or want to know how to use his speed to best effect.

Thats nothing compared to Ben Black cos when Widnes played Halifax a few weeks ago Black took a quick tap penalty 20 metres from the Widnes line and with no one near him he dropped the ball.

Every player makes mistakes so why have ago at them.

Kevin Penney will be a superb player in a couple of years, with good coachign and fan support.

We loved him, his enthusiasm is infectuos and we would have in a black and white shirt forever f we could but he is a wire through and trough.

Give hiim a break, give your support and he will flourish in time
