| Quote: marshman777 "from that picture Penny is at fault as all defensive systems work form in to out, meaning the players should come in so they are a solid defensive line without holes, and if the ball is shipped out the defensive line stays together and pulls out. As the picture shows KP stayed on his wing and left a gaping hole inside (closer to the sticks for the converstion)
Seems a bit strange to leave the hole on the outside but there is a greater chance of a dropped ball or mistake if it goes through more hands to get to the whole.
Hope this makes sense.'"
Not necessarily true. Number up outside to in, nomination, shift and re-nomination. Yet, in that line up there were numerous defensive frailties, quick ruck, no control, chasing markers. All of these will draw numbers to the middle, which in cycle will 'turn in' the edge players shoulders (See King on the photo supplied, facing the sticks/ruck rather than staying 'square') Either way, good attacking sides will pick you up on it.

yes it does....But unfortunately in that particular Example the line was pretty solid until Louis Anderson went walk abouts. Earlier on in the play he went so far in field it was ridiculous then he was done by Flannnery changing the direction direction of his Run....Flannery then stood in the tackle and King rushed out of the line Flannery then off loaded to Gidley who drew Penny and put Gardner in...
whats safe to say in all of that was it certainly wasnt Penny's Fault
Hope that makes Sense you should never look at a still and simply blame the winger (to be fair it was a long time ago). Penny is angling in like King. he;'s not just stood out on the wing marking his opposite number Like Fozzie used to do...
anderson had gone which obviously made King Panic. Penny could have also Rushed out to Gidley but then people would have criticised him for Leaving Gardner with about twenty yards of open field

| Ahhem. He hasn't even signed yet. Some of these arguments will look stupid if it's all another daft rumour.

| Penny has had 2 seasons with Swinton, and during this year we had Williams playing there as well - I think around 12 games. So our current and past coaching staff will have been in a good position to assess his performances, and compare the two wingers. Plus Penny would have been training with us as well. So we must have had a very good look at him before taking him on.
And I think this could be the nub of the issue, TS may not have taken him on to push Riley and Monas, but simply because he thinks he offers more than Williams as a cover wing. He will probably be on a modest salary, and a 1year contract with a club option for a further year. We have probably already spent around £200,000 on players this year and this may be TS simply making what he believes will be a modest improvement for 2014.
Just seen your post Teeside. Yes, sensible comment, but I am pretty confident this one is correct.

This is the most pertinent comment on this rumour/signing as well as just about any other rumour/signing. Kevin Penny on a 5 year £150,000 a year contract would clearly be a ridiculous bit of business, 1 year on £15,000 would (IMO) be a no brainer. Same could be said for any other signings, extensions, or for that matter players who have been let go. None of us are privy to the terms of players contracts signed or turned down.

You stand in the corner of a stadium that doesn't exist anymore?

| He was unreal when he first broke into the first team
his try and at Sts was the fastest I had seen anyone run, he had to slow down to put the ball down
For some reason though he lost that pace which set him apart from others so I dont really see the point on him coming back when hes not a quick, the Penny of 07/08 would be a different story.

I've watched him at the LSV two or three times this year. He is still rapid and doesn't jump out of the defensive line in the way he used to. Hard to judge him but he does seemed to have improved his positioning and game awareness. He still has the habit of backing his pace in all situations. Not a bad thing in the Championship but one that could get him in trouble if he were to return to SL.

| Hes played for a few teams since he left us, doesnt seem to of been able to hold down a spot, which even when he left us I thought Widnes, Wakey or London would of kept him if he still had that finishing touch.
I just cant see this being true, Smith wasnt even a fan of his at his best.

Interesting that you have probably seen more of him than the rest of us. I only saw him play one game, and he did seem a lot more street wise than when he was with us. But what did you mean by ' backing his pace in all situations' ?
Not passing ?
