See from the Guardian that David Mowatt, Conservative candidate in Warrington South, has donated £22k of his own money to Warrington South Conservative Association.
So a man who can afford to donate the average annual wage in one go wants us to believe that he is best to represent "ordinary" people.

I would amend that to those that don't vote pay additional taxes and have benefits reduced.

Surely part of a democracy is that you have the right to vote or not vote. Why should people disinterested in politics be forced to make a random selection, or just think "well at least the BNP would get the asians shipped off home, so I'm gonna vote for them if I have to"

He didnt quite say that - he certainly mentioned the importance as he saw it of voting but he pointed out that in Australia the compulsory voting is something everyone has grown up with and so its more accepted - the fines for not voting are pursued , and youve got to have a good reason for not showing up. I asked him could it work in the UK , he said it could but its getting the " compulsory" aspect of it accepted that could be a real battle.

One major difference Australia in its last federal election in 2007 had an electorate of 13 million , today in the UK we have 44 million - a couple of people told me theyd heard it and enjoyed it but both said no to compulsion and they are people who will be voting without question -

Agreed. I think there is a box (or similar) on the voting card that signals zero interest in the election or something but everyone has to mark a card.
