I would be happy for him to play out the season there....
Not a big difference with D Clark and Cas other than actually turning out for us.

| With all the forwards going out on loan. Does that mean that Ben Currie is on his way back?

Just clearing some room to bring Widdop over early.

I can think of a few that would probably drop him.

You would have to win a league title for that to happen

| Loaning out players is inevitable when there is no Reserve competition. It should be a requirement that all SL clubs have a reserve team.

Well said !
I must say though, i would have thought that Luis would have figured a bit more off our bench considering he was touted as the next big thing when we bought him from Cas. I bet DP would have blooded him long ago.

Totally agree that for player development a reserve competition is necessary.
Maybe SuperLeague could incentivise clubs, by increasing the Salary Cap, for those clubs that choose to have a reserve team, and create an official reserve team competition.

| There has to be something that encourages reserve grades. I don't know many who don't agree that a reserve grade is important. The mystery is why we haven't got one. As Boss says perhaps the RFL / Superleague could stipulate that the salary cap is different for those who do not run a reserve grade. Might get Gary Heatherington on board who is the most visible of the objectors

The most common reason put forward is simply money and with the two Hull sides sharing the cost of running an Academy you would have to think there is some merit to this. Nevertheless several Championship sides also run Reserve teams and they surely are not as well financed as a SL side ?
But, the recent Leigh side that beat Fev ( 29-20 ?) included 5 Saints players, all because the only alternative to a Reserves league is Dual Registration of squad members that don't have a game that week. That just seems completely farcical to me and I suspect Saints are deliberately rocking the boat here to make a point to the rest of SL and the Championship ( which I am more than happy with).

| The problem i see with dual reg is that it can stop other players coming through to lower division clubs if a club can rely on dual reg players every week, & the idea can paper over the cracks of the lack of available talent to keep RL going long term.
Weren't Warrington & about 15 other clubs involved in a reserve set up a couple of years ago till it fell by the wayside ?

| Reserve teams are not the answer as anybody who has watched a reserve game over the last three years will tell you.
Revert the academy structure to u18s and u21s with five over-age players permitted in the u21s, in effect a reserve team. Make it compulsory for all Super league clubs to run the u21s team as a minimum.

Is that not because so few clubs have a reserve side, or were not stocking it appropriately with players?
What would you say the issue with it was? Not high enough quality?

Quality was awful, we were including Rochdale reserves in our team to make the numbers up. What quality of players do you think Keighley have in their reserves? Hardly the right preparation for Super League players.
There was also uncertainty of fixtures taking place. Pretty certain in the final year we ran a team both our games with Wigan were cancelled as they couldn't raise a team. If they couldn't what chance the rest?
The problem I see is with the academy pathway stopping at u19 not many players at that age are physically ready for week in week out rugby, so where do you get game time for them? That's why I think u21s is right with the ability to play five overage players to cover first team squad not selected or returning from injury. The limit on five avoids stockpiling and will see the filter down of talent to their correct level continues.
The u18s and u21s structure use to be in place and was producing good quality Super League players. Those looking for a conspiracy theory could ponder over why the controllers of Wigan and Leeds, who had traditionally reigned at that level, were the two ringleaders in the switch to u19s and dual-reg at a time when Warrington and St Helens were starting to overtake them. I wonder which were the only rwo clubs to vote against the proposals?
