| 11/ all this sun-led, government backed " Help for heroes"
They are not heroes. A hero is someone who puts his own life at risk, whilst helping others. Not someone who fires at or drops a bomb on someone he neither knows or has a grievance against.

I have to disagree with you. Those soldiers out in afghanistan are not there by own personal choice, they were sent there by the government. they will be there until the government decides to bring them home, and most will be extremely lucky if they arrive home without a limb or limbs missing,or even arrive home with breath in their body at all. They are there as heroes helping people whilst putting their own lives at risk...........your own definition of a hero. And they only fire guns when fired at,only drop bombs on known terrorist targets and are there to protect the afghan people against a terrorist organisation that would also wreak terror worldwide if left unchallenged. So every one of them is a hero.

| Nothing personal against soldiers, but as I said, they are not heroes. A couple of points to clarify;
1/ a person becomes a soldier thru his own choice, knowing full well that he could be sent to a war-zone.
2/ who exactly are they helping? The Afghans, who were getting on with their lives until the Yanks decided to carpet bomb the place.
3/ Soldiers do shoot at innocent people, mainly thru boredom and nerves. Ask soldiers who have seved in Basra. They do drop bombs on villages. Last year a village was wiped out. Their crime?- Attending a wedding. British and Yank "intelligence" got it wrong.
4/ which terrorist organisation is this? Al- qaeda that does'nt exist (another American bogeyman), or The Taliban, who to my knowledge were a political party, well they were when the Russians invaded in 79.

i don't know, is there an army here that you seem to have a strong dislike over? that could be a clue.
Seriously though, read teh AUP that you agreed to when you signed up, also you've been advised to read it several times since then, as i recall.
3rdly, lighten up, for gods sake.

To be fair...they joined up on their own free will and get paid for it (arguably a decent wage/ benefits etc).

A young 18 year old private sent out there would be on a starting salary of around £12,000 per year. Would you want to risk getting your arms and legs blown off and spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair for those wages?

| As of the end of 2010
168 wounded in afghanistan (loss of limb)
deployed by that time between 9500-10500 troops
Chance of losing a limb = 1/56-63
As of today-
Number deployed 10,500
number killed 346
Chance of dying
1/30
I think they are the odds. It was my own maths.

| What grinds my gears on the business about the war and soldiers is the competitive crocodile tears by politicians doing their crappy 'paying tribute to those brave men and women' in the House of Commons.
When the Gulf War veterans have been suffering ill health for 2 decades, the government doesn't want to know. They just say Gulf War syndrome doesn't exist and their lawyers remind them that the MOD has no liability.
When soldiers come back and are stuck on the dole, suffering depression and ending up turning to drink, violence or suicide, the government doesn't want to know. Unless it can put them in the criminal justice system.
But if a soldier dies then its good propaganda because it reminds us all just how vital their job is and how we all should support the war, and shows how much empathy our politicians have with the armed forces. Meanwhile the government is helping even up the odds a bit for the Taleban by cutting the resources and military equipment as part of the defence cuts but we're all in this together including soldiers.
