| Quote: Antro "Good list!
About time somebody mentioned Chissy - he used to look like a cartoon character with his tiny little feet (twinkle toes) and his small patch of hair on his balding forehead.
Hesford took some stcik from opposition fans, and our own at times, but I have never seen anyone so reliable under a high ball - if he didn't catch it we got a penalty.
My 2 best memories of Bob were
(i) against Wigan when he hurdled over a player on the ground and and caught Henderson Gill with a knee to the head (but made it look accidental), and then he picked him up like a rag doll to try and show the ref he was okay, then just dropped him back on his face.
(ii) the first game after we had a big W painted in the in goal area he went in wide of the posts at the Fletcher End, dummied placing the ball down just short of the little half back who was trying to stop him going under the sticks, only to deck him with a cracking hand off, trample over him and dive theatrically onto the W for the try, and the rapturous ovation from the home fans'"
sure that was on the opening day of the season against bradford...

| Have to include JD - only one man of steel from Wire.
Others?
Most have been mentioned, but John Woods is a fave of mine along with Bateman.

| Difficult to pick just 5....but I'll give it a go...
Start with John Bevan, who to most Primary school kids at the time, like myself, was absolutely God-like.
Ken Kelly, who was very under-rated, but was often a match winner for the Wire.
Mike Gregory, who epitomised everything that Rugby League truly stands for....loyalty to a club, graft even in a hopeless situation, and most of all just a very good player.
Jonathan Davies, despite only 2 and a bit seasons with the Wire, he made that time truly memorable with some really classy stuff.
....And the full 15 who took on and beat the Aussies in '78, for simply providing a night that, until the day I die, I will never forget ...

Behave - what about Ken Kelly, Man of Steel 1981?
For the youngsters out there, he used to play for Warrington, England and Great Britain and was rather good.

| Can anyone remember John Bevan's 1st game for the Wire. I think it was against Castleford. He did score on his debut. But having come from union he was a unaware that you have to keep hold of the ball when you get tackled.

Top player. I was a ball boy when he scored his 60/70/80/90*m try against Bradford at home in the early 80's.
*it gets further every year

| Then you missed a treat when he played for us first time round, that 1974 side was the best I ever saw at Wilderspool.

I thought the 1975 team was better when they got Tommy Martyn.

| My dad (god rest his soul) used to get a tear in his eye when he told me about the 74/75 seasons. I bit like I'll bore my daugher about '86.
