| Also, referring to our game, you must get 10 mins in the bin for a professional foul on a Thursday night (Salford v Widnes) and not on a Friday night like in the first half. Refereeing inconsistencies do my head in!!

| Saints forward passes have been allowed since SL started, up there alongside there "defensive line speed".

| Watched the saints game this morning. I don't understand why they can't use the cameras for it? Sure if it is a 50 50 give it to the attacking side but if saints had got owt out of that game it would have been a sad night!

We used to go to the video refs for forward passes, but, they were in the days of the two cameras high up on cranes (like the ones that they use at golf). As soon as they stopped using the cranes, the video refs were not called on forward passes. I can only think it was a cost issue.

That was a shocker. Refs now ignored at least three against us this season (v Saints and St. George as well). As soon as he blows for that sort of penalty he's got to be reaching for his pocket. Don't have a clue why it's not happening.

You can't use the cameras as different angles will alter how the human brain perceives direction. GPS tracking of the ball is about the only way to do it. One good idea I had once was if the ball was thrown forward it exploded. Think of the entertainment value alone, it would be incredible viewing. And I tell you what, there would be far fewer forward passes.

In Rugby Union you can go to the TMO for forward passes, and they don't use GPS tracking.

| I've heard some of the daftest definitions for a forward pass such as observing the position of the passers hands is one...another was even if the ball travels forward it doesn't count as a forward pass if the passer manages to overtake the receiver before he receives the ball. When I asked the poster for a more detailed explanation he accused me of playing truant during physics lessons at school. My definition of a forward pass is if the ball travels in a forward trajectory, it's a forward pass. There are so many markings on the pitch these days it isn't too difficult to spot a forward pass.

| In these days of controversial reffing decisions may be the best solution would be to tear up the rule book....why should the fans be bothered about the rules if the players, ref & RFL don't stick to them.
As for forward passes, they are bound to happen with a flat attack which seems to be an obsession with most coaches.

And both of those daftest definitions are correct- although I think you've misunderstood the latter- and yes it's domething taught at o level/ GCSE physics. Your definition of a forward pass is wrong. The ball will almost always travel forward in relationship to the place it was passed from. Watch this refereeing video to understand why- it even uses all those markings on the pitch to explain it! so easy even a girl can understand it. - I'm a girl that teaches physics by the way....

It's a union video- but despite unions delusions of grandeur It still plays with the same basic laws of physics.

what a load of cobblers...if a ball travels forward its forward anyone should ungerstand that...i agree 100% with mr brady..in fact i heard an even dafter explanation when leeds scored a try in our demolition of them a few years back in the play offs..leeds scored of a forward pass that was at least 3 yards forward and phil clarke said it was like jumping off a train in batley and landing in dewsbury...the mind boggles at why a simple game is made so complicated

| What would the game be like if, like some posters above, we effectively wanted to ban passing on the run?
Seriously, watch the (original) video on the link - judging a forward pass based on the lines on the pitch is completely the wrong way to do it.

| I think what people are struggling with on here is that the forward pass is judged relative to the passing player, not the ground. That is why they cannot use pitch markings.
Imagine Clarke is running forward at 30kph and passes the ball flat (relative to himself) to a supporting Myler. Both Clarke and the ball have a forward velocity of 30kph. In the 0.25 seconds the ball is in the air it will have travelled forward 2m relative to the pitch. This is a legal pass.
