He isn't giving it away, he's selling it.

| Didnt Ryan Atkins ebay his wembley shirt? Each to their own, but they arent short of a bob or two. Why not donate the money received to charity?

Who knows what they do with the money?

| If they don't want their medals, shirts (yes I include Atkins in this) or whatever else, they should either give them to a fan at the ground and make someone's day (in this case cheering them up if their team has lost) or donate it to a local charity to auction off.
I understand, and feel sad for them, when ex-pros in any sport feel the need to sell treasured mementoes from their career years after they retire because they obviously need the money. When a current pro who obviously doesn't (seriously, we're not talking thousands here, what difference does a couple of ton make to a top player?) sells theirs pretty much straight after getting them it shows a lack of respect for those aforementioned ex-pros, as well as the supporters who pay to watch them in my opinion.
It's their right to stick things on eBay if they want to, and I'm not suggesting the RFL ban it or anything, but I'm not going to pretend I like them doing it.

| My Mum is good mates with the daughter of Gordon Banks (I think that is his name). The guy who played in goal when England won the World Cup in 1966.
APPARENTLY he recently sold his World Cup winners medal. I couldn't believe it when I heard, he certainly doesn't need the cash.

You might find he does......I might be mistaken but Banks isn't the first to do this.
I think its fair to say that before Sky bought the English game, footballers' wages weren't particularly extravagant, thus why we have these 'sales' happening.

I know that during his era footballer's wages were nothing special but from what I have seen and heard he certainly doesn't need the money from selling his medal.
It didn't bother me that he had done so, I was just surprised.

| Gordon Banks sold his winners medal to stop his children falling out over what to do with it once he has passed away.
He has probably heard of or seen when families fall apart after the death of a loved one, when they fight over who is entitled to what.
Apparently he sold the medal so that the money earned could be split evenly between his children.

| In some way there are 'relics' of a bygone age, where the only real proof you played were the medals you had.
Technology has moved on, and any player from the late 80's onwards can easily access recordings etc of major finals, internet reports, newspaper archives etc.
I just don't really understand the value a fan would put on owning it.

Wouldn't you have thought his 'children' would have more sense than to argue over a treasured possesion of their father's so much he felt the need to offload it. They should be ashamed and count themselves lucky that he is still here to pass on his memories of his life and his great career. They should treasure their Dad not his possesions.

| I can understand selling something that's worth £150,000.
A Challenge Cup loser's medal is hardly going to bring in a life changing sum though so in my opinion it should be given away to a fan or charity to raffle off if it isn't wanted.
