Fat blokes in the mud, flat caps, bogs that drain pi55 directly onto your boots - Now it's all 'Big Ask', 'Arm Wrestle', 'Collision' 'Contact' 'Facials' 'Upper Body Strength' 'Big Units' 'Scooting from Dummy Half' 'Energy Levels' 'Laying the Platform' ‘Middles’ and 'T-R-Y'. Quote: Les Boyd Is God "lets hear it then'"

The story went something like this…………..

I made my debut for Widnes in an U20’s game against Warrington. Warrington had a bloke called Les Boyd (I cheer along with a few Aussies) who was returning from injury. Les was an absolute f8888ing nutter and during his career got sent off about 18 times, all of course for mistaken identity. I think he was also the first man to be sent off in State of Origin. Playing for Widnes was a bloke called Kurt Sorenson (I load of Kiwis cheer) who was a hard as f8888ing nails. After about 20 minutes Boyd hits Sorenson square on the jaw with one of the best punches I’ve ever seen, and Kurt hits the floor. The Ref runs over to Kurt with Les standing over him and starts to reach for his pocket. Kurt starts to get up and grabs the Ref by his arm and says

“Don’t send him off Ref……… He will be going off later, but I'll decide when”

Neither can I but many tried. There were some players who Sir Les just couldn't stand, fairly long list, but Kurt was right at the top. Every time we played Widnes it would kick off. Great days. icon_biggrin.gif

yeah I cant remember Sorenson even squaring up to Boyd one on one.....

Like Boyd said himself at a sportsmans when asked why he disliked Sorenson so much
"he just always picked on the little guys" was his reply...

thats closer to the truth than Jiffys tall story which has been said about Jim Mills, and Mike Nicholas to name two others...

He tried, Biscuit, in the Regal Semi @Wigan in 86/87 (to be fair, I think he broke Boydies nose), but Les had the last laugh by absolutely smashing Kurt the Skirt all over the place, in the said incident. IIRC Boydie was eventually subbed , but still won MoM.

I remember an absolute nutcase from Barrow called Eddie Syzmala (sp) who had a reputation of a hardman. He might have had a go at Les, but most nutcases did (and came worse off)

Davies is a great speaker - at the GF a couple of years ago I was lucky enough to hear him speak.
He told us of a story that went something like this

One of the first matches he played for Widnes and he was scrum half.
Every time their was a scrum he'd go down the blindside and leave his marker grasping thin air.
After this had happened 3 or 4 times the opposition second row ('old school' and a real tough nut) said to Jiffy - right in front of the ref - ''if you go down the blindside one more time I'll knock your f***ing head off''.
Jiffy turned to the ref and said 'have you just heard what he said?'
The ref replied 'Aye - and if I were you I wouldn't go down the blindside again!!'

We were wetting ourselves.
Great speaker. Great bloke.

Bob Jackson kicking (mainly missing) the conversions. Great player, great bloke, bloody awful kicker.
Along with Sir Les our finest Aussie import.
