I think there will be a copy right on 'the wire'... it wont be from the rugby team though.

| WTFC bought the copyright to "The Wire" and had it on their badge up until recently. This was obviously despite the fact that they were commonly referred to as "Yellows".

Interesting. Who was the previous owner of this copyright from whom WTFC purchased it?

| Quote: silver2 "The wolf on the coat of arms signifies the county of Cheshire and is derived from the arms of Hugh Lupus (Lupus means 'wolf' in Latin), the First Earl of Chester. Personally, I still regard Warrington to be a Lancashire town therefore the Wolf doesn't apply. Cmon the Wire.'"
I think the wolf on the Warrington Coat of Arms appeared post 1974 when the gnomes of Whitehall decided that Warrington should be in Cheshire to make Cheshire a viable entity after deciding that Stockport, Hyde etc should be part of Greater Manchester and The Wirral part of Merseyside.
The River Mersey was historically the Lancs/Cheshire boundary but, with the building of the Ship Canal through the Mersey basin, the Ship Canal became the boundary. The completion of the Ship Canal and the canalisation of the Mersey more or less coincided with Warrington RLFC establishing themselves at, what would prove to be, their home for 110 years. A ground that, from the posts on this site, holds many happy memories for us all.
Call me an old fart but, as far as I am concerned, I am a Warringtonian, a Lancastrian and a Wire. If using a wolf mascot to promote the club brings in extra revenue all well and good but
it is equally obvious from this thread that, to the fans, Warrington RLFC will always be The Wire.

| At the risk of appearing pedantic myself can I point out that the trade after which the club and it's supporters derive their nickname is that of WIREDRAWING.
Wirepuller is a colloquial euphemism for someone who engages in sexual self satisfactory practices or American political malpractice and used to be a term used by supporters of other teams to deride Warrington, Notably Ray French.

That was how it was explained to me many years ago, we were known as the Wire Drawers from the trade whence it came and to the amusement of opposition fans Wire pullers, needless to ask why it was shortened to Wire.
The old press used Wire as opposed to Warrington in their match reports all readers would instantly align Wire with Warrington.

| I wonder what other fans views are on us with regards to this? (cue a few funny ers calling us "y"...)
Do they call us "Wire" or "The Wire" still? Even with opposition fans I don't recall hearing them call us "Wolves" or "The Wolves".
It doesn't sound right or sit right with me when Sky say "Wolves" or "The Wolves". I always pull my face and think 'ooh, don't call us that!'

It cracks me up every time!
Not as much as "always your year" though.

nothing is as funny as 'doing it the Wigan way.' It's asking for trouble.
