Quote: morrisseyisawire "Not sure I agree about the bench. The prospect of Morley, Carvell, Monas and Harrison/Cooper/whoever coming on during a match to lift momentum must have (must get used to using the past tense alas) been a huge psychological lift to the team this year and it has served us well.

Tonight, we suffered two serious injuries to two key backs. If Rathford had stayed on I really think we'd have battled back and it would have been closer, but losing them both was a blow too many.

In hindsight, who would we have put on the bench? If you are going to put a back on the bench then it has to be a utility, Ratchford for example, who can come on in a number of positions and change the game. As it is, most people thought the team selection was right.'"

I agree with ratchford off the bench.
I just didn't wanna be the first to say it as I always have the same two or three that rip whatever I post!

I've never fully rated ratchford, he IS fantastic against a tiring defensive, so he often shows uo well in the last ten mins of each half.

at fullback he's defensively weak.
He certainly is no halfback.

I would have had no problem as coach of playing him off the bench and sticking Hodgson at fb, who seldom let us down.

Quote: BullCharge "Considering Warrington had only 2 subs for the last 30 mins and both of the injuries were outside backs, I think the injuries can be blamed. Warrington were lucky to have 13 men on the pitch however.'"

Are you for real? Warrington's defence was fantastic for 35 minutes, Wigan made enough chances to win several games. Had Wigan taken their chances they would have won by a record score. Young bucks turned over an old Wire pack.

Send him to Wigan, he is a fantastic talent.

Quote: Dita's Slot Meter "For once, I agree entirely with you.... I'm more gutted this year than after last year's loss to Leeds, simply because after that loss there was no 'what ifs' because Leeds fully deserved the win and were the better side.

Now I'm not saying Wigan didn't deserve the win, however, there is a definite stench of 'if only's' and 'what ifs' about tonight's game - The fact was, until Monaghan's injury, Wire were dominating, almost cruising to victory. Wigan were making mistakes, almost crumbling under the pressure of the scoreboard getting away from them.

Soon as Monaghan departed and Wigan almost immediately scored, then it was pretty obvious that Wire had a massive task on their hands... At half time, when we should have been pretty giddy about our prospects, I actually said to my son that we was in big trouble, simply because the whole shape of our side was now badly damaged.

When Ratchford went off, that for me was it....We had 8 forwards on the pitch, the structure of the team was in pieces and Wigan were able to force the pace of the game - The best side did win, but I think most sides in the league would have took that Wire side, with that (lack of) formation apart in the second half.

I'm not saying its a shallow victory for Wigan, but if they had lost Tomkins and Richards in similar circumstances, then I think its obvious the effect that would similarly have had on them and they would have been left thinking what most Wire fans are thinking tonight.'"

You got battered and outclassed in the second half. Wigan's forwards ran all over you.

Quote: lefty goldblatt "The injury to Joel was the key to our downfall.
We simply switched off, and never woke up.

Our forwards were dominated in the second half.
We looked out on our feet after 60 minutes.
Wigan looked dangerous every time they had the ball in the second half.
We offered nothing in that second half.

Have we seen the trait.
That second half wasn't good enough.
A game too far?????????? yep

We were a shadow of the team we were a month ago.

Well done Wigan

Dust yourselves down, Wire'"

This. The Joel bit especially, that was the key part and exactly the same happened against Widnes. Psychologically we have a hole there, because we basically collapsed in both games after a bad injury to a key player. I still think we would have lost before Ratchford got injured.

Wigan did nothing different than they had been doing prior to Joel's injury, we just failed to deal with it as we had been. Goulding going over from the scrum demonstrated that.

Yep that's the one, keep going & aiming for appearances in Finals.

Our goals for next season have not changed one bit after last night, we will be aiming to play in both Finals.

A reality check after the BITTER disappointment of last night is that we finished 2nd in the League made the a Semi of the Cup & made another Grand Final, other than Wigan every other single team in Super League would gladly swop their season for ours.

Quote: DaveO "Not here to crow, just to offer an observation from my son who said just before half time. "Dad, Warrington look knackered".

I think he was right and it was a key part of why we won. We were the fitter/fresher team.'"

I'm not sure it was necessarily a fitness thing. Warrington's work rate in the first half seemed higher than ours. My wife was very frustrated that we weren't able to make many yards when we had the ball as their defensive line was really crushing us at times yet we were hanging off when Wire had the ball and letting them run at us. I said you never know it may lead to them being knackered. Granted there was a six minute period I thought that was very wrong but it may have ended up being a factor.

Great post FB. It's easy to forget what we have actually achieved after the defeat last night. With the exception of Wigan the remaining clubs would have loved to have been in our shoes.
Time to relax, reflect and move on for next season. Thank goodness we have the World Cup to watch soon.

I think you threw everything at us in the first 30 minutes to blow us away and it nearly worked. But it started to take it's toll, fatigue kicked in and the injuries came at a bad time for you. Even at 16-2 down, I still thought Wigan were right in it - things just didn't quite click for us in the first half, but the signs were there.

Just another point, I thought your fans were great yesterday. Good banter and not a hint of trouble all day.

1. I doubt we will ever win it, 16-2 up should be game over, hurts x10 more then last year, back to back loses are hard to come back from

2. Says alot that most of us knew when Ratchford went we knew it was over while still in the lead, we had no bodies left, Joel gone, Ratchford gone, Carvell went down tunnel in the 60th min, the only thing that shocked me was Wigan only ended the game on 65 mins seemed it was over long before.

3. Wigan like Leeds prove once again the league means nothing, its just a practice for the playoffs, once in the playoffs the best thing to do is rest players an have the peak in Sept.

We switched off. During the lengthy delay for Joel's treatment I thought then that we were gonna get burnt when play resumed, and sure enough we'd dropped a gear and suddenly looked underdone. Whether that was down to panic that a key strike player was out, concern for a colleague or just lack of concentration due to the break in play we'll never know.

1. We got a penalty not long before the break and kicked for touch. Stupidly we tried to run in a try on tackle one and Bridge was put into touch. We should have either, one, kicked for goal from the penlalty or, two, taken our time with the set and ran the clock down.

From there the game turned on it's head...

2. J Monaghan got his injury, the game had a long break where our momentum was completely lost.

3. Wigan scored just before HT.

4. Wigan scored just after HT.

5. Ratchford got injured.

6. From there for about five minutes our defensive line was all over the place.

7. Wigan scored again.

There was no coming back from that the game was over as we were gone and then Wigan went and scored again just to rubber stamp it.

Commiserations to every Wire fan there last night (Apart from Dropkick Murphy)

I thought it was yours at half time. I felt terrible and thought there was absolutely no way we would come back and win.

I can't believe it. Better luck next year.
