| But all 3 of those have come through our academy. Or does it only count if they are from the town in which the club are based?

Learmouth (a very promising prop forward) has spent most of his time at Leeds academy (scholarship). He was in the England U16 side that smashed France at Odsal.

| Nothing wrong with Wires academy, its the local amateur scene that's the problem. I know warrington have "signed" a youngster 11 or 12 and then promptly sent him to one of the wigan teams. St pats if i recall correctly.
We have some good clubs with people working hard but probably due to the numbers of kids playing we just aren't producing enough quality.
An old coach of mine on his first visit to Oz saw the local penrith amateur set up and was amazed by it.first and foremost its focus is the kids, the open age stuff is the after thought. We have it the wrong way round. Bank quay bulls for example are one of the most successful rugby clubs in the north west how is that helping warrington RLFC. Its not because their priority is open age Rugby, while youth teams are secondary.
Work to do in the town.....

| Ben Currie is from Lowton Rouges which is closer to Warrington than it is Wigan and if we are picking technically Leighs area.

Farrell got what he wanted which was to stay at Wigan. If he'd have wanted to leave he would have been let go just as Danny Bridge was.
I'm actually surprised that he has made the England squad, but good luck to him and indeed all of them.
The outstanding player from those that I have seen in that squad is Stevie Ward from Leeds.
I will be there in December to cheer them on regardless of which clubs they come from.

Penrith's youth system always gets hailed as a good model especially because of the numbers of kids involved with it but Penrith Panthers have made the playoffs once in the last seven years...it doesn't always translate through to being successful at first team level.
It's like the famous West Ham boast about producing Ferdinand, Lampard, Cole, Carrick, Defoe and Johnson, half the England team in recent years - it's not made West Ham this formidable club that everybody fears has it....neither have Everton for all their Academy products, Rooney, Jeffers, Dunne, Ball, Osman, Hibbert, McCann etc

Actually Ben is from Golborne not Wigan. And he has played at Golborne Parkside all his youth.

He's a cracking player and a really nice lad, my son has been friends with him for years. He was on scholarship at Wigan up to U16s. Wigan, Warrington and Salford were all after him, but Wire offered the best deal apparently, even though he's a Wigan fan, he chose to be a Wire. He played in the same team at Golborne as Greg Wilde who is at Saints (and also a Wigan fan LOL) At least Greg got it half right
And Yed is right, he lives in Lowton

Does it really matter who the lads support ? I know both greg and ben very well and their families and know they are wigan fans, but this thread should be about the good young talent that is coming through, and as a couple of the lads have come from a little old club called Golborne, I think from a personnel point of view (my kids also play at Golborne) I am very pleased for the lads who have worked hard to get in the squad.
